I checked this show in 2016. Already familiar with almost all the cast through more recent series of Arrow and Scream queens, but also some movies, I was glad to see them next to bad-asses Frank Grillo and Rhona Mitra. Probably the best roles of these two, since they have here the opportunity to show their irreproachable acting skills instead of their fighting techniques. The interest was little by little drawn to the plot that instead of appealing by its fantastic element, it shined by its human side. It showed that we need the different in order to better understand our own selves. A human Macchiavelic mind seems more scary than any bloodthirsty monster. The pace of the story didn't stop increasing, intertwined with numerous U turns, reaching a climax that had let the... "gates" open for half a dozen sequel seasons. But, like every good series, this is as far as they would let it go

I remember hearing about this show back in 2010 but never watched it, and I'm bummed, but glad I watched it on NETFLIX because I wouldn't be able to wait every week. This show has an amazing cast and story line. It wasn't the show itself, that was the reason it got canceled. Either the time slot or promoting, but I loved this show. Awesome characters, suspense, just all out fun. So many cool stories going on. If Netflix picked this up or someone continued this even by adding a R Rating, this would blow up! I can't believe there's not a second season, but fantastic one season. There are so many ways you could take this to the next season. I was pleasantly surprised with the excellent cast of Rhona Mitra, Frank Grillo, and some newcomers. You must watch this show if you are reading the review. You will not be disappointed. There are hot people all over, but no nudity, which is fine. it doesn't really call for it. I guarantee you will keep watching.

The storyline of this television series seems to be a composite rip off of several other movies and TV series that are doing well. It seems to be a rather poor approximation of the movie Twilight combined with an overly melodramatic version of the SyFy network's Sanctuary series. The creators of The Gates appear to be trying to cash in on the popularity of two very different genres: dramas (ie: Desperate Housewives) and scifi/fantasy/thrillers (ie: Sanctuary and Supernatural). The editing and cinematography are even less creative than the storyline. Additionally, the poor quality of acting, the somber lighting, and the director's over use of soft focus lenses make this series difficult to watch.

I have read some of the other reviews about this show and felt compelled to give my opinion...I am enjoying watching it. It may not be completely original with its format as some other people have pointed out, but then so what? with the amount of shows out there these days I imagine it is extremely difficult to come up with a completely unique and original concept.Yes I agree Twilight has re-sparked the public interest in vampires but for me it was always Buffy and Angel that really paved the way for all the other vampire shows we have today. Also something to keep in mind is although The Gates does contain vampires it's not solely based on vampires.I'm a little confused as to why some people are taking issue with the fact that the vampires can go out in sunlight? The explanation of them using sun cream is quite logical/believable and I find this much more acceptable than them being all sparkly like in Twilight lolThe Gates was a little slow to start with but has improved with every episode, I'm loving the tension and snide comments between the vampires and the were-people.I am also liking Devon, it's interesting to see what evil plot she is trying to implement. And as another reviewer mentioned I'd also like to know what's in the box!I think that you need to watch this show with an open mind and not be too quick to compare it to other shows in its genre and just enjoy it for what it is. It is worth a watch.
