After a very good first episode, there's something that the rest of the show lacks of. Because the story itself could have had a much better tempo than the one it ended up having. Seems that once they've approved the pilot, they've cut the budget and let them deal with it, and the show that could last longer, ended up being 4 episodes long, with lots of cliches and twists that you could notice in advance they were going to happen. It's kind of disappointing cause the first episode is great. Sets lots of questions and subplots that you're looking forward to be developed. The photography of the show gives it everything it needs to keep you watching longer, cause it's just impeccable. Handles the emotions, the camera movements, and some very beautiful footage of Scotland's forests. I think it could have been better...

We've all watched a mystery where you suspect, or just know, they've purposely been throwing you one red herring after another until they spill the beans and you feel "taken." "One of Us," aka "Retribution," skillfully moves from being a show you THOUGHT was about finding the murderer of a newlywed couple, to how the families of the victims deal with the appearance of the killer on their doorsteps. Now dead at the hands of an unrevealed family member, the killer remains an element in the story, although overshadowed by the progressive revelation of complex and not altogether wholesome inter- and intra-family relationships. We see trust erode as various family members suspect one or another of the crime, and everyone seems to have a skeleton or two in the closet. Damaged people, all, and that includes the police. Throughout, the view is never blatantly mislead to conclude who the guilty party is, instead sharing in the confusion of the cops who nonetheless methodically unravel both murders. I have enjoyed John Lynch since seeing him in "The Fall," and I was especially taken by his performance in the last few minutes of Retribution. It's great British drama. Stay with it and pay attention. You will not be disappointed, and you'll think about it a few times afterward.

This is an almost perfect ten. THIS is how a series should be written and acted! Stellar cast, outstanding writing. Most series are predictable, with characters making very stupid decisions, and the pace is sooooooo slllloooooowwwww.So much happens in just the first episode, you think you've watched an entire series in just episode one. And it doesn't let up from there, right through to the end. The most authentic, suspenseful whodunnit I have ever seen. Bravo!

It was a dark and stormy night in the Scottish Highlands. Brutally murdered young newlyweds; the pretty young wife lying on her back, hugely pregnant, with her throat slit from ear to ear. The boy-husband slumped over on the sofa soaked in blood. The devastated parents and siblings (next door neighbors) of the two victims. The crack-addicted schizophrenic murderer? crashing a stolen Lexus while on his way (for some mysterious reason) to the home of one of the victims. The pretty female agent investigating the murder happens to be selling illegal acid to make bank for her dying daughter's brain tumor operation in India. Her daughter's girlfriend took a hit of that very acid thus hurling herself from her balcony because she thought she could fly. Daddy #1 (abandoned the family years before) suddenly grows a conscience so profound that he walks in front of a truck. More crying. Daddy #2 is hiding the fact that he has Parkinson's Disease from Mom who is screwing their farm supervisor. The most sympathetic characters are the hacker son and a dying older woman hellbent on assisted suicide. The list goes on. If Nessie herself had risen up out of the Loch like Godzilla and devoured the whole lot of them I wouldn't have been surprised. The writer should have used 'Chekov's Gun' to cut out all that was not serving the story (and the characterization) around the murder mystery so that we could have watched a crackerjack narrative showcasing this talented ensemble cast.
