I waited until season 2 in hopes that they would up their game with the obvious criticism for this show. Not only did they not fix the obvious problems with season 1 they doubled down on the poor writing and stores. I think its already said ad nauseum what is wrong with Lucas Till's take on Mac. Look the actor isn't bad. But the character is. You want further details of why, just look at any review of IMDB and you will see.But no. I want to focus on the stories, and the MacGyvering being done. Short of it? Sloppy, half baked, predictable, and generally something I would expect from a fanfic. And while that is on par with the original MacGyver, to be fair the stories weren't great but not horrible. It's 2018 with the likes of the Expanse, Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, Sherlock, etc. Do better. Then you have the improvising. While not impossible. MANY MANY MANY of the scenarios Mac, MacGyvers his way out of is HIGHLY improbable. (example. Popping a tire of the truck they are following with a tire wrench al la slingshot. ) Adding to the stinkeye effect I give to each episode is the fact that they almost never explain what they are doing. Just do it and move on. This thing has potential as it looks to be not a direct reboot from the original MacGyver...we'll see as I'm only 5 episodes into season 2. There are clues that I won't get into. But they really need to up their story game.

The synopsis given for this re-imagined version of the original is a bit laughable. The new MacGyver requires a whole back up team. They should have just given the role to George Eads, as his character at least embodies the sense of action and fun that the original show had. I suspect some bean counter thought he was too old for the role, but that just goes to show that they didn't understand what made the original show so great. The new MacGyver has more angst than brains. And I can't help but notice that in the photo they are using, they put Eads in front of the title character. That's pretty telling.

I watch this show but that is because not much else on. It will never be up to the original. I think instead of trying to copy the original what I would have done is to make Mac and Dalton the sons of the originals all grown up and having their own adventures.

Having been a long time fan of the original, I was at least intrigued to see what this new version had to offer, on watching the pilot wasn't the biggest fan, Mac, the cocky 'ladies man' and partner in crime Jack Dalton, who was more 'Jack Bauer' than lovable scoundrel. However a few episodes in, it begin to grow on me the series gets better as the show progresses.Lucas Till is a great casting choice, different to the original (he drinks and doesn't have the same mid-western "Yes, ma'am" values) but manages to take on the physical stunt work and explanatory dialogue with energy and gusto. My only real issue with the show is on occasion I'd prefer if it were just 'MacGyver' rather than "..and team" on cases as it does take away from the main character's genius a little.Overall it gets a 7/10.
