At first this show had a good premise, now all it is just porn. I will never look at it again.

So I really wanted to like Insecure, it was recommended to me as this ultra-progressive look at the modern experience of black women who honestly do not get to tell their own stories enough in media and I was told it was funny. It's not really funny and not especially progressive but it could have still been likable but for one thing. Issa. Do I mean the character Issa Dee or the actress/writer Issa Rae you ask? Yes.Issa Dee is super trashy and immature. She cheats on her man because she's having relationship problems, instead of doing something useful like going to couples counseling or just breaking up and she has very little regard for how her actions affect Molly, seriously who raps about their friend's intimate life to strangers and pretends that's okay? All Issa Dee cares about is sex. All Issa Rae cares about is propping up Issa Dee's continually bad decisions. Flawed characters are great but when you're blatantly author avataring like Issa is it just seems like you're out to justify your own misdeeds. There is very little more obnoxious than someone behaving like garbage then still expecting sympathy.Molly is such a much more sympathetic character and way more interesting but Issa hogs a bunch of screentime because she's basically the creator's avatar and cannot be ignored. You can't watch the show if Issa annoys you because she is the show. Instead of Insecure someone should change the title to Issacure. I couldn't stand her by episode 4 of season 1 and tapped out a little before midway through the second season because she just never improved. Maybe it gets better but I doubt it as long as Issa prioritizes herself and her issues over everything. Do I mean the character or the actress/writer there? Again, yes.And apparently Issa(actress/writer) is also abrasive to her fans as well from what I've heard. If her fictional avatar is anything to go by that wouldn't surprise me.

I thought we had another episode but the show ended on heartbreak. The trials and tribulations of Issa (Issa Rae) made for some hilarious and great dramatic television on par if not better than typical half-hour HBO comedies. The show explored the life of twenty-somethings struggling for careers and stable relationship and all the awkwardness that comes with the transfer to professional life and dating with the potential of marriage.Issa lives with her boyfriend Lawrence (Jay Ellis) who is can't find a job that fits his education and status and depends on Issa for the bills. Issa works at a non-profit for underserved kids. One of the funniest scenes is at the beginning of the show when the kids pelt Issa with questions about his personal life and she defends herself the best way possible. Their relationship is strained and becomes even more so when Issa encounters an old flame Daniel (Y'lan Noel). After the second season: In one of the more entertaining shows on the most entertaining night on television on the most entertaining channel, Issa Rae returns for a hilarious and awkward season. Issa is newly single and exploring her newfound freedom. Lawrence (Jay Ellis) has to adjust as well staying with his friend Chad (Neil Brown Jr.) on an inflatable mattress. Issa's best friend Molly Carter (Yvonne Orji) has more experience being single but always hopes to have an ideal relationship. Things seem to fall apart for Issa from the first episode and only get worse. She wrecks her car staring at a dick pic, throws a party that gets out of control, and goes on way too many terrible dates through Tinder. In the end, she still feels lonely and tries to seek out the man that helped cause the split with Lawrence, Daniel King (Y'lan Noel). Issa also has trouble at work. Her job to help students after school to learn and do their homework runs into a problem when a vice principal only recommends black students and does not include the Latino students. Her coworker Frieda (Lisa Joyce) sees the problem and wants to change it but Issa shuts her down just excited to have students back in her class. Molly hopes to move up at her law firm but she suspects her bosses judge her by her race as they promote white men. She starts to look around and forms a bond with another lawyer in a Chicago office (LilRel Howery). Lawrence has success at a new job too but finds the developers are just nice to him and don't respect his ideas. He forms a relationship with a coworker Aparna (Jasmine Kaur).Check out more of this review and others at swilliky.com

HBO's new series "Insecure" is funny and the script has a sharp tone and it's mouth is witty and brash and all of this comes out just fine from Issa Rae(a "You Tube" and web star)who makes this series work just fine. It involves the life and times of one Issa Dee as a modern black woman in California who's a school teacher and she's just trying to figure it all out with the world of life, love, and relationship. All while this is going on Issa sees how her world and others is always connected with race, gender, and culture, and the experiences are almost always racy and very blunt. Aside from Issa being a sexy colored bra wearing black female she's brash and to bold with her outspoken mouth, yet her best friend the elegant and upscale Molly(Yvonne Orji)tries to keep her on the straight and narrow road of life. Overall this series may not be everyone's cup of tea, as it's a brash, blunt, racy take on the life of a single black lady still it entertains in a fun and modern outspoken sexy way that will win with many viewers.
