Love Father Brown. Have watched all 5 Series, and now Season 6 is on, and I can hardly wait to see what the cast can come up with. Keeps me very entertained.

It is wonderful to see Father Brown move into its fifth series, the show is quite wonderful, it's such easy viewing, it's funny, of course it's intriguing, it's just a great family show. Of course I love the heavy and complex mystery dramas on virtually every week, but there are times when you just want to sit back and watch a cosy, safe murder mystery. Forty five minutes of engaging, entertaining mystery, a genre which had seemed almost dead. Mark Williams has managed to inject something into the character of Father Brown, his performances are superb, he's a joy to watch, as are all of the cast. There have been a few duff episodes, but for every bad one there's a quality one, the likes of The Owl of Minerva and The Bride of Christ, they are great viewing. It comes as no surprise to me that the show is a big international success, I love it.

I borrowed Season 1 at no cost from my local library, and I have to say it was worth every penny I paid. I shall not even pay that much to watch the rest.Even if you have not the faintest idea what the books were like, or what the theology and moral principles of their author may have been, the series is bound to disappoint. I am actually shocked that an actor of the calibre of Mark Williams would have assented to participate in this ridiculous and totally unbelievable piece of PC rubbish. If the BBC had at least remained true to the good nature of Chesterton's work, it might have redeemed the travesty somewhat. But spooky music, low budget horror movie darkness, and equally dark plot twists turn the fun frolic of the original concept into just one more pathetic Conan-Doyle imitation. I kept expecting Peter Cushing or Lon Cheney Jr to appear in the next scene.I won't dwell on egregious faults like the City of Birmingham ambulance responding to an injury in the Cotswolds, the misplaced (Midlands or Home Counties) accents of the locals, or the permanent cast of Soap Opera supporting roles. Things like those are just the scum on the top of the foetid pond.Give it a miss.

This is your typical 1950s British detective series, replete with period costumes and cars. The setting is the usual idyllic English village with the usual stereotypical characters that seem to also channel Midsomer Murders, Hercule Poiroit, and Agatha Christie's Miss Marple as well. The series starts off strong but through the years has suffered the usual changes to balance political correctness, a formulaic approach to the plots, and character changes that end up filling it with fluff and tosh! While the lead actor is very good, his use of the same facial expressions, and the odd gasping for air that he does with his mouth, all become very tiresome. The episodes soon all take on a "sameness" that is reminiscent of a one act West End play. I'm sure this genre fills the niche for some to sit at home week after week, losing themselves in the fantasy of English village life, but eventually one loses interest. I'm sure the same thing happens to the writers as well! It's entertaining, lighthearted, and total fantasy, and if that's what you want to watch, this will work for you.
