While the Americans are churning out thousands of TV programs all claiming to be 'comedy', the Canadians are quietly creating actual comedy which bears the scrutiny of repeated viewing... much like the British used to do back when they had a sense of humor. It's not perfect, though... but even when the stories and the writing don't always hit the mark, the characters themselves more than pick up the slack to keep it watchable. The strong cast has created a great family of characters much like 'News Radio' did before them. In fact 'News Radio' and 'Third Rock From The Sun' and to some extent 'Cheers' are similar entities... Normal people doing silly things in ordinary places. It's a good sign when the entire run has been unspoiled by an annoying laughter track!Curiously, it seems to be set in some fictional climate that most Canadians will be unfamiliar with! It's almost as if it's Arizona every day in Dog River! There's a very laid back feel to this comedy and the gags are usually understated. It's witty and has no agenda. Despite the characters being flawed and just a bit too naughty, the whole experience is very good natured and when people get out of line there's always payback!None of the actors are familiar to me, even Brent Butt, but they all score highly on screen and there doesn't seem to be any weak links. In the IMDb reviews, there are some references to the dreadful Seinfeld which is strictly aimed at a USA audience. This is much funnier and way cleverer. If you like the unforced humor of this Canadian classic then also check out some British offerings such as 'The Detectorists' and 'Early Doors'.
... View Morewell I live in Saskatchewan and literally 30 minutes away from where this crap was made. I find the show totally laugh free TV with acting at the same depth of junior high interpretation. the lead is bland, the actors playing his parents are just horrid. the local idiot is dumber than dirt, the ethnically diversed male officer is a sterotype. this show is what is wrong with Canadian produced shows at their worse no talent, no style and no clue. the only thing that keeps it from being a 0 rating is at least the two young ladies in the show are decent eye candy but again talent challenged. any time watching this show is time stolen from me and I have watched two episodes so I wish to get that hour back.
... View MoreI personally am very happy that I can find a show that my kids can watch and not have to worry about swearing or shooting or people trying to kill the rest of the world. My young kids can watch this show with us, and their grandparents and I don't have to worry about content. How many other shows can you say that about, including cartoons?? Not many in this day and age. But for us parents who would rather pay attention to what our children watch is not a negative influence, this is great.I realize that some people prefer swearing and violence to clean shows, but thank goodness there are smart writers and producers who are willing to take a chance on good old fashioned comedy. Thanks Brent Butt and the rest of the gang. Keep them coming.
... View MoreThere's not much else to say about this show; in a fashion similar to Seinfeld, Corner Gas is sans plot and hit-or-miss. Seinfeld was almost always a hit, but occasionally not-so-good. Corner Gas is similar (not to compare it with the King of Comedies); it has its moments of brilliance, but sometimes the humor feels forced. Nonetheless, Canadians love the show, as it depicts humorous regional stereotypes about prairie folk. In typical Canadian fashion, it attempts to portray other parts of Canada, like Toronto, as egocentric, so it naturally appeals more to Canadians. The show is character-driven, however, and can appeal to a vast audience, provided that people don't form opinions too early after seeing a couple of bland episodes. It really is quite funny once you get into it.
