Batman Beyond may not be seen in as high regard as Batman: The Animated Series or Justice League, but I personally think it's a highly respectful and entertaining continuation of the character millions of people have come to know and love like a longtime friend. It's a good sequel to Batman: TAS and Superman: TAS, and it took risks like having another kid take the stage front and center as the Batman character, in the form of Terry McGinnis.Since it debuted in 1999 it's been faithfully followed by fans of the wider DC Animated Universe (DCAU), fans have sometimes universally agreed on the show's quality while others have criticised it for not feeling too much like a Batman show. I'm with the former. It's a perfectly watchable TV show that keeps the atmosphere of Batman: TAS though with a Blade Runner-sequel aestethic added to it and arguably makes it more appealing to younger audiences. It's a fine show that's deserving of being part of the DCAU canon.

I watched this when I was 10 or 11 and thought it was pretty good. To those of you who don't know it's about Bruce Wayne as an old man that gives up Batman since he's aging. Fast forward to…the future, as I like to call it. A kid, Terry Mcginuess ends up getting in trouble with a gang and Bruce as an old man helps him. Through a series of events Terry loses his father to the gang and finds a way to stop who sent the gang after his father. Bruce Wayne then ends up mentoring Terry as the series goes forward. Watching it now on Netflix I'm surprised how dark it could be and how it entertained the audience past 5 years old. Sadly it didn't get a chance to end. Not until the last episode of Justice League Unlimited season 1 which is the official ending to Batman Beyond. They also made a movie Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and I'll review that soon. I'm also surprised that the person who voiced Bruce Wayne, Kevin Conroy was still in this series. Also the person who voiced Terry, Will Freddie, did good especially in Return of the Joker at the end of the movie. Anyway give this a watch on Netflix before it gets pulled since it's pretty good for a Batman cartoon.

What really made the series work for me is that the story had a solid backbone. The characters in the series were all well developed and had great dialogue. I don't think the story would have worked for me at all if it didn't have those brief interactions with the side characters.Another thing that really worked for me was the setting. The futuristic world was well built and thought through. The setting felt really believable, because it did little things like introducing new vocabulary, futuristic sports and arcades. However, there was one thing that didn't work for me was the poor science fiction writing. If you know anything about physics, chemistry or biology gets it wrong A Lot, not all the time, but a lot. Since the main audience is kids, maybe it's not a big deal for the most of people, but for me it was something that constantly took me out of the show. All in all, it is a solid version of batman with a great soundtrack and animation and for me personally it is the best animated version of batman. Though if you're into more adult like series with better science, I would recommend you watch "Ghost in the Shell" instead.

While only running a short 52 episodes, Batman Beyond makes its mark in the DCAU time-line with memorable villains, chilling plot twists, and meaningful character development. It is set 20 years after TNBA series, and can be thought of as a direct sequel. While featuring the same animation style as the series before it, it adds a Gothic, gritty, and at the same time epic coat of paint to both Gotham and the environments Batman finds himself in. Batman Beyond also features a different musical theme than the previous series with powerful guitars, interspersed with pumping dance vibes, and even some fresh remixes of classic themes. Even though this show aired in 1999, some of the comedy is timeless, the jokes are laugh out loud funny and don't detract from the serious butt kicking that occurs when Batman has to deal with his rogue gallery. It's a shame that the series hasn't received a reboot or more than one feature length film, but DC Comics has breathed some life into it with a new comic series. In summary, Batman Beyond is a definite must watch in my opinion; It makes no difference if you have been following the series from the start or if you are just getting into the universe of the Dark Knight, Batman Beyond is truly a worthy continuation to a legendary series.
