When this show first aired in the 90s, I avoided it because I thought it looked bad. With it currently showing on Comet, I decided to give it a shot. The best way to describe this show is missed opportunity. There are story lines that don't come to fruition. At times the writing is good other times it seems like a 10 year old was creating the content. I think at least some of the blame can be placed on Sorbo. Rumor is he got a few of his writers fired which explains why it seems like the show had no real objective. What is done very well with this show are the characters. Trance, Harper, Beka, and Romie are great. I know some people have complaints with Harper, but every scifi show needs a smart ass techy. It just makes for fun character interactions. I really wish there had been a bit more romance on the show. Harper and Romie should have gotten together. Or maybe Trance... either way the lack of love interest leaves the show a bit hollow. Sorbo is serviceable as the lead, but he doesn't have enough charisma to make his audience care. I hate how he always seemed to use throw away phrases like "It's all Greek to me." I feel like this so is set soooooo far in the future that people wouldn't be saying stuff like that. I took issue with Tyr. His character was unnecessary and his story arc ultimately lead to nothing. The other big problem with Tyr is he's basically another badass like Sorbo. The ship really only needs one. Season 5 is absolute garbage.
... View MoreThe first season and a half actually shows promise. The original premise of the show is based in a fascinating Gnostic/Cathar cosmology. Basically we are fooled by a powerful-being/god who we are tricked into thinking is good and loving but is actually a fascist rule obsessed control freak. The entities fighting this control freak (like Trance) are persecuted and labeled as "devils".Very little of this actually emerges on screen though we get tantalizing hints about this fascinating back story throughout season one. The first two seasons are quite good with interesting character development.Sadly Christian-nutter Kevin Sorbo is horrified by the meta=plot and manages to take over and remove the long term story-line under the premise it is "too intellectual" and instead turns the show into a "Hercules sleeps with every woman human or otherwise - in space ".The last three seasons are increasingly erratic with no common theme other than Keven Sorbo is a sex god sent to fertilize the cosmos. Individual episodes tend to contradict earlier ones and none of the characters other Sorbo's Dylan Hunt get any interesting roles or character development they are all transformed into Dylan Hunt devotees.
... View MoreFirst of all I don't like TV these days, I found Andromeda at my local video store. My comments on this program are based on my point of view as a sci-fi fan and middle-aged mother. I enjoyed such programs as Enterprise and Star Trek -Next Gen. I enjoyed Andromeda immensely because of the depth of the characters and after an episode or two, "Harper" became my favorite. There were moments where a character's appearance would be quite different but the story went right along with it. I found the amount of times romance came into play a bit too much. I prefer Star Trek Next Gen's style here, I guess I'm more into the plot and less into eye candy. Compared to the shows rated PG (US) on TV in 2013, this is very, very tame. The first four seasons were the best of the series and then in season 5 you really had no idea what they were going to do. But usually I wouldn't bother to watch (or rent/hire) a program unless I really want to see it. For this series I felt I HAD to get back to the store to get the next season. I don't want to give too much away, but I did not enjoy Firefly or Stargate as much as I enjoyed Andromeda. The Roddenberrys were very clever in this creation.
... View MoreWell phew.............Just finished season 5 earlier the previous evening. Almost 24 hours on and still buzzing. I loved it.Season 5 was not as bad as I thought it could have been. It was spotty here and there, but that was due to the budget cuts the show has taken. aside from that I loved it. But season 1 and 2 will be my favourites. And now that it ended I feel sad. The last 20 minutes left me feeling sad. Trance is my faovurite character. Who wouldn't want to have a living sun as their friend. That would be so awesome...Also I loved the design of the ships. The Eureka Maru was untidy, cluttered and on the outside looked like a ship that was made to do lots of heavy work. The Andromeda looked sleek and looked like it was built for war. Though the smooth lines make it very beautiful to look at I would have liked to have had just a little bit more roughness around the edges, say a few exposed guns or such on the hull. To me that says "warship." Just my opinion.I think they ended it pretty damn well, and did the best that they could do with what they had....
