Uttama Villain is yet another best movies of Kamal Hassan. Unfortunately before watching the same, I gone through few reviews in Youtube by popular movie critics. The problem with critics is that their job is to watch every movie which gets released and to pass their opinions in their point of view.Let us view this movie as Kamal Movie. So let us watch this movie with a deeper insight. The movie has a story, twists and turns. But if you watch this movie keenly and step into the shoes of every actor who played this movie soon you will realize the deeper meaning it conveys. I am giving this movie 10/10.Kamal and sometimes Amir Khan's movies are always experimental. Meant to invoke your intellectual mind. So you should watch the movie in that aspect. However there is one exception. Since this movie bit slow and lengthy, it may not at times suitable for theater viewing. Instead it is good to watch through Amazon Prime, or Netflix or via YouTube release. Since you can watch it at your convenience. Take some breaks whenever you wish.

I cannot believe that so many of the past reviewers have called this piece of crap a 'masterpiece', etc. I tried but could not get past half way thru this utter nonsense. After almost 75 years of film making in Tamil, "Uttama Villain" is an absolutely vindication of the fact that movie making in India is still in amateurs' hands. Their only qualification is that they have access to money (illegal funds I am sure) and no one deserving really cares about film making. Kamal Hassan had his good performances in the past but with this film, he has lost all of the respect that I had for him. About direction, the less said the better. Ramesh Arvind is either crazy or unbelievably stupid; perhaps both. I pity the investors and distributors for this film. They must be all in dire financial straits for sure

Uttama Villain: Through my eyes Being one of the greatest filmmakers and actors Indian Cinema has ever seen when we go for a movie with Kamal Hassan tag, a quality of its own kind is expected, and Uttama Villain doesn't lag behind. It may not be a master piece, but Uttama Villain is a piece of Art, which has a lot of matter in it.Uttama Villain draws a sketch over the life of Manoranjan, a Tamil Superstar, who wants to make a quality movie of his own standards. The movie in parallel with Manoranjan's story depicts the story of his movie, 'Uttama Villain', the story of a presumed to be immortal Theyyam artist. There is a great significance in building up of the characters, Uttaman and Manoranjan, for which Kamalji requires applause, but revealing that significance kills the thrill factor. There are many such sequences which requires applause, like, the robotic dance of Kamal in 'Lovea Lovea' song, it took a few minutes for me to realize that the song was made too cinematic so as to fit in the masala movie of Manoranjan. Such a pump of reality is not seen in movies these days. But the main thing which makes 'Uttama Villain' close to heart is its appealing emotional factor. There were more than a couple of scenes which made my eyes wet. Kudos to Kamal Hassan for acting so perfectly and Ramesh Arvind for the emotional approach he has adopted. While an emotional platform is laid for Manoranjan's story, there is a scent of humor for Uttaman's story. The poetic presentation of Uttaman's story seemed novel, even the trial of non-stereo wits offered the same novelty, yet, the entire plot of Uttaman had a half-baked outlook. When Manoranjan's story is so engaging, the story of Uttaman didn't offer that feel, instead, it offered a bit of lag, even the lag could've been justified, but that logically not that satisfying twist in climax made that lag of Uttaman's story futile. That error is negligible, yet it could've been made better, at least for the perfection built up in the entire movie. Those three poetic songs in Uttaman's story were well presented, especially, that last 'Iranyanin Kathai' song. Lyricist requires special applause for those meaningful lyrics, the story of Iraniyan in a single song.Parallel scripting of both the plots keeping their respective genres untouched, Kamal requires applause. Not only for making such a heart touching script, but also by portraying the character, Kamal Hassan once again proves that he is a great story teller and the best actor alive. His acting was so perfect that it makes one's eyes wet. Some scenes like, Kamal talking with Jayaram, Playing ball with his son, His assistant reading letter, his daughter reading letter etc revealed Kamal's mastery in acting. One has to really experience it. These days when actors of fame go behind mass masala movies, it is great that Kamal did such a movie. All the actors had characters of great importance.K. Balachander's portrayal of Guru was perfect, Uruvasi, Parvathy and Andrea excelled in their roles, while, Pooja Kumar stole certain frames with her beauty, she had even exposed her acting skills in that final song. Ashwin did a good role as son, while MS Bhaskar and Viswanath did justice to their roles. Special appearance by Jayaram was ideal, did it with required perfection. Nasser's idiotic antagonist was also effective.Making by Ramesh Arvind was also good, made perfect use of technical aspects. He is gonna make it big in movies, Perfect direction for a movie of this kind. Cinematography by Shamdat was of good quality; especially the frames of Uttaman's story were good. But the one who surprised me was Ghibran, perfect music. Editor could've cut certain scenes better, seemed okayish.Overall, Uttama Villain is a great attempt blended with mastery, which not only appeals emotionally, but also offers many implications. One can't leave theatre without tears if one watches it whole heartedly, once again thanks to Kamal Hassan for offering movies of this kind, while other top actors are busy with collections and mass image. Uttama Villain also draws light on the plight of Indian Cinema of today, where actors are trying to become superstars but not best actors. This will be one of the most discussed movies in future. My Rating: 8/10 Movie is more of an art form than a medium of business, and the eternality of an actor depends on the quality of characters he does. An actor who makes good movies never dies; he will continue to live in the hearts of people. And, Kamal Hassan will be a 'mrityunjayan' , an immortal who will live forever, for the quality of characters he portrays and movies he make.ThankYou _Sooraj Thailakshmi Theatre, Punalur had less than 20 people for the Morning Show, 5/7/2015

How well can the Legend Kamal Hassan handle emotional sequences with utmost perfection - Uttama Villain is the answer. An intensely packed story about a superstar which often gives an aura of Ulaganayagan self-reflecting himself,Uttama Villain is a brilliantly penned meta-film that couldn't make the intentional impact because of mediocre direction and careless handling of cinema inside cinema. The story moves in two parallel tracks- The primary track has an autobiographical feel with many sequences reminding of Kamal's own illustrious carrier and personal life, depicting protagonist Manoranjan's relationship with his wife, kids and his mentor Marghadarsi(portrayed by Kamal's real-life guru late K. Balachander). This particular portion cleverly portrays the struggles and sacrifices that a hero has to make for attaining and maintaining his stardom depicting the personal life and emotions of Manoranjan. The part can boast of some exceptional sequences that displays meticulous brilliance of Ulaganayagan and are sure to make our eyes wet like the scene in the beginning were Manoranjan meets Margadhasi and the emotionally brimming conversation between Manoranjan and his son.The second track presents a folklore based comedy about Uttaman who has been blessed with immortality. This part that generously used Senthamizh language failed to meet the brilliance of the real life part with tacky visual effects, numerous unwanted lengthy sequences and dull comic numbers.Had this part been presented better, the movie could have easily joined the league of all time favorites from Kamal.Ramesh Aravind who has given some notable hits in Sandalwood like Rama Shama Bhama have done a really good job presenting the real life sequences with required perfection, but the reel life sequences required a more inspired narrator who could have lifted the quality of the movie a level. The most important thing was to join the thin line between reel and real lifes for the fulfillment of the basic idea which the movie couldn't triumph comprehensively, the reason why a large section of the audience have opinions touching the negative side.Added to this the slow pace of the narration and the lengthy duration of almost 172 minutes may not be suitable for normal front bench audience looking for just entertainment.Kamal Hassan was simply brilliant as always and played both Manoranjan and Uttaman excellently. The brilliance that he showed during the emotional sequences deserves a standing ovation that it could touch the audience heart in a flash.I always considered Pooja Kumar as an actress below par,but she surprised me with a matured performance particularly as 'Karpagavalli' in the Uttaman story.Andrea as Dr Aparna and M.s Bhaskar as Manornajan's P.A Chokku were impressive.Jayaram,Urvashi,Nassar and Parvtahy Nair too made their presence felt by good supporting performances.Last but not least,K.Balachander sir made his last act memorable handling the emotional sequences with perfection.Young music director Ghibran can be proud of the fact that his songs and score play a major role right through the narration with the songs 'Kadhalaam Kadavul' and 'Loveeaa' being the picks from the album.Overall,Uttama Villain is an intense take on super-stardom and mortality that can cater to movie buffs and the fans of Ulaganayagan.Verdict::Uttama Villain presents a sharp contrast between immortality and mortality throwing light on the life and emotions of a superstar. The execution of the thought being slightly on the lower side than one would associate with a Kamal movie and being devoid of usual masala elements, the movie is recommended only for the die-hards of the actor and movie buffs who can sit through long 172 minutes.Hats off to the acting brilliance of Kamal Hassan watching whom on big screen alone is sheer pleasure! Ma Rating::6.5/10 _Afsal
