a nice film. in a surprising manner. because it has the subtle and wise science to be more than part of a specific genre. because it propose a seductive, colorful and charming - in its dramatic significance - story.because the cultural clash has adorable nuances. because it is a story about love and traditions and influences and the good son in middle of huge crisis. and because one of the seductive characters is ... the spirit of Cary Grant made by a surprising actor. so, a good choice for the viewer looking for a seductive film. and the real gift remains the end. so, see it !
... View MoreWatched A Touch of Pink again today. Its been playing a lot on the movie network and it continually surprises me as such a tender a sweet film. As part of a crop of ethnic gay identity films it really is one of the sweetest and touching of films. Not only does it address the issues of ethnic identity across class lines but also how ethnicity and identity and sexuality are understood differently across cultures and countries. The attitudes that the film elucidates are tender and sweet as families try to come to terms with sexuality, sexual orientation, class standing, social status and love. One of the most touching moments in the film is when Alim realizes that both he and his mother share a common sense of loss about their lives. They both used film as a way to escape realities that they didn't want to deal with and both came to terms with the fact that life doesn't always work out the way we hope. Sometimes life throws a curve ball that leaves our dreams shattered and we must continue, live on, with dreams deferred and accept life for what it is and who is there to love us. On a structural level the film plays with a lot of traditional gay representations and gay male imagining through film in the incarnation of Alim's invisible friend as Cary Grant. On so many levels the film is intelligent and fun. Truly a sweet and magical film.
... View MoreThere has always been the shock of the bride/bridegroom, movie genre. In this country, "Guess who's coming to dinner?" stands out. But this plot is well nuanced in the discovery that not all is as it appears and why should the "successful" son of one sister get all the accolades when he's a hypocrite and the other sister's son is the real thing, but "comes out?" In highly ordered societies and ones that defend their customs at all costs, the idea of having a gay son is an anathema. America is still trying to get over the stigma and those of the religious right wing have not nor will they anytime soon. Some people may be surprised that Muslims can be gay. Some were surprised that a pope could be Polish. The thread of human nature runs through all of mankind...it doesn't stop with WASPs. One aspect of the movie which was very pleasing was its confronting the viewer with how strongly movies can influence us. The protagonist's mother moved to London to become the Indian Doris Day. Her son has envisioned an angel in the form of Cary Grant to help himself through the rigors of being gay. It's apropos. The acting was good and the plot, although threadbare, did have a few twists that pleased. But probably the most exceptional performance was given by MacLachlin who caught the exact intonation, inflection and cadence of Cary Grant"s voice. It was remarkable.
