I had no expectations other than wanting a time-killing zombie film to watch. How could there be films that are well-done but passed over? Well, this is one of them. What this film has is exactly what most films don't, especially among the spate of overblown summer films this year. While it's slow-moving at times, all the extra time is spent on genuine, realistic character development, a too rare exercise sometimes. Surrounding some of the most original zombie movie treatments are reactions to unreal circumstances that ring true. At one time funny, it is also part snarky, sinister and visually dark. Some images are hair raising. The camera work is consistently striking and playful, matched by well thought-out dialog and street-wise sensibilities. The diatribe by the black gang member about race and it's implications is dead on ridiculous. I've heard it in real life. For all of the film, I was convinced that the writer believed in these possibilities and made sure they worked beyond theory. Buried among some really creepy scenes are clever snippets of sarcasm and non-pc banter. And none of it comes off as insulting. It's almost a realistic ghetto version of a monster film. No one character in this film is allowed to escape, either. It's kind of beautiful, in many ways, a real love project that probably suffered from its title. I won't give away anything here but what happens to the "cholo" who robs them is creepy as all hell, even stunning. The one weakness is the girlfriend's acting which seemed unconvincing. Granted, crying on cue is difficult, but her acting seemed untrained. It's a minor weakness though. And none of this film comes across as cheaply done. I'm sure this will become a bigger favorite over time. George Romero could never achieve this.
... View More"The Revenant" sets itself apart from other horror comedies because it introduces a new-hold on a minute before I go on I would just like to mention something. I brought up the fact that this movie is a "horror comedy" does anyone remember when movies just fit into one category? Now we have rom-coms and dramedies starring Brangelina and Bennifer. Yeah even names get combined (or at least on the E! Channel). Someone even had the genius to combine a cheeseburger and a donut into a single food item. As humanity evolves it seems so does every thing around it. Oh right the movie I was going to review-sorry for trailing off there. David Anders plays Bart an undead soldier who is brought back to life where he spends the film lamenting over what he has become. Just kidding he decides to become a vigilante with his stoner pal Joey played by Chris Wylde. You may recognize David Anders from his stint on "Heroes" and you may not recognize Chris Wylde at all, although I do recall him being in a few DiGiorno Pizza commercials in the early 2000's.I found that the film got really entertaining once it became like a Boondock Saints clone but with a zombie guy? Or is he a vampire? Yeah when I mentioned at the beginning that this movie sets itself apart from other horror comedies it is because it introduces a ghoulish being called a revenant. Revenants (Not to be confused with Replicants from the 1982 movie Blade Runner) are essentially a hybrid of a zombie and a vampire. More tendencies of vampire exist than a zombie, with a revenant being of normal intellect while also having immunity from most vampire weaknesses. Decapitation turns out to be the only fatality to a revenant. The story goes through some thrilling turns as Bart becomes an undead crime fighter while also having to reveal that he is still alive to his mourning girlfriend Janet and her friend Matty. Matty is a nurse who also practices some sort of aura meditation thing. She is one of my favorite aspects of the entire movie and sadly she is under-used. The concept begins with a great amount of excitement and energy but sadly it falters towards the end.Overall if you enjoy movies that have a supernatural element in them then you will like this. Since zombies and vampires and David Anders are the biggest things in Hollywood now then this movie is 3 for 3 so it's good but not great. There is some real good chemistry that exists between the characters giving you a feeling that their is more to the complex relationships. There is also some really outstanding conflicts that occur that our heroes must face. If only the second half is as good as the first I would say that it is a perfect film-instead it is AVERAGE at the best. It is a definite RENT though.
... View MoreMy son found this film & recommended that I watch, having been a fan of David Anders from Heros as Adam Monroe & being a fan of the Zombie genre I had high hopes.I wasn't let down, this film was brilliantly entertaining & the ending totally unexpected! Anders & Wylde work brilliantly together & D. Kerry Prior's script is a great new take on the zombie genre which other film makers should take note of. This film is up there with Shaun Of The Dead, The Vagrant & a host of other films, most of which never get the credit they deserve.A true future classic
... View MoreI usually avoid Zombie movies unless I am in the mood for a B grader. I went into watching this with the intent of watching a decent B grader - was pleasantly surprised. It starts off as a B grader with the scene in Iraq with some very cheesy dialogues on ethics but from there on transforms into a pretty decent watch. You can think of it as The Boondock Saints meets Shaun of the dead. However, its much less whackier than Boondock and much less zombier than Shaun. Not a bad watch overall watch - has its moments - but has uneven pacing which sort of affects the overall tempo and prevents you from completely getting into it.
