In reply to this review, by the_doofy, on 25 May 2017 I can categorically state that absolutely no animals were harmed in the making of this 'foreign' movie. No whales. No cats. No fish. No alien monsters. The pod of pilot whales on the beach near the start of the film were all FAKE. As in - not real. In fact - the film makers are delighted and not a little amused that you thought that real whales had been haunted down and butchered. If you thought they were real, then that's a great compliment to the craft on display. The whale that forms the centrepiece of the first scene between Ruth Bradley's and Russell Tovey's characters' first meeting was sculpted out of polystyrene, coated in silicone, and painted. The rest of the whales that you see lined up on the sand are 100% CGI.Did the_doofy really think this film lacked the budget for any CGI? Did he think that the film makers, (when not busy hunting down and butchering pilot whales) captured some giant tentacle aliens and forced them to perform?
... View MoreWhat's with the Irish Film Board of late, cranking out loads of low budget hits like this gem.A small time tale of fun with Irish stereotypes, but enough depth, good script, and good acting, and buckets of laughs to make it stand tall.A creature feature, sci-fi, horror, and comedy, even a bit of drama, you can't say you don't get your monies worth. And lots of well known TV and film faces for us UK people to spot.I see Richard Coyle in loads of stuff these days, especially sci-fi,he seems to be able to handle any genre you throw at him, and loved him in Coupling doing comedy.A mention to Russell Tovey who most will know from Being Human. He doesn't seem to be able to turn in a bad performance. The rest of the cast are fine. I dropped my score to 8 only due to some of the stereotype characters these films seem to feel are needed, maybe for the US market. The Quiet Man was a long time ago, move on.
... View MoreMost of the time humor and horror don't really match well besides a couple of exceptions. And grabbers is one of those exceptions. Okay it might not be super scary but the monsters/aliens are well done and original. Mix with that the funny Irish drunken conversations, a couple of good actors, and a story that is funny and original and you get Grabbers. I had a good time watching it and certainly don't regret it. It's the perfect movie to relax with on a rainy day. Nothing difficult to watch, just plain easy entertainment. I would rather watch a funny horror movie like this one then some crap horror movies that we get all the time. Even though I have to admit this one is not scary at all, it's just funny.
... View MoreGrabbers starts off promising, but towards it's prolonged end, it falls short of being something truly magnificent. As far as it's comedic humor goes, Grabbers delivers in small doses. The humor is raw and black, but that doesn't mean there weren't any solid laughs. But the main problem I faced when watching this movie was the clichéd story that we have seen before in alien/monster invasion movies. It isn't that different to the majority and it is too predictable to be a real gem.Grabbers is fun to say the least. But what it lacks is pure substance and originality. It won't be the most entertaining film on your watchlist, but if this is the solitary film that you have left to view, it won't be the worst movie you have ever seen.
