Sports biopics are notoriously bad, Pride of the Yankees is among the worst of the worst. Poor writing, inane dialogue, this movie is no credit to the great career of Lou Gehrig, whose records speak for themselves, but are hardly noted in the movie. What purports to be a sport story in a silly love story. The fraternity students at Columbia all look old enough to play the profs at the school, and that goes for Gary Cooper too. It was tough to sit through so many cliches in both performers and actions. Gehrig deserved much better.

The story of Lou Gehrig, one of baseball's all-time greats and one of its most tragic figures. We see him from his school days, to college days, to his start with the Yankees, to his emergence as one of baseball's true heroes.Great story, though not always well told. Can be quite clumsy at times and feel overly folksy or Hollywoodized. Some scenes are quite irritating they're so badly done. While Gary Cooper may seem perfect for the role, as understated, humble heroes are his forte, initially he doesn't fit, being to old for the role. It did seem weird, him obviously being at least mid- 30s-plus and kidding around with kids in their teens or early-20s.However, in the end, it all comes together in a movie that encapsulates Gehrig's life well (with a few poetic licenses along the way). Gary Cooper gives a solid performance as Lou Gehrig and Teresa Wright lights up the screen as his wife. Both of them received Oscar nominations. The final few scenes are incredibly emotional and provide a fitting finale.

This is simply a lovely film period. I can take or leave Gary Cooper but it's difficult to think of anyone who was acting at the time who could have equalled let alone eclipsed Cooper in this role, he IS Lou Gehrig just as some sixty-odd years later Marion Cotillard WAS Edith Piaf. English born and bred I have yet to see a live baseball game but I love reading about the sport as it was played when it was STILL a sport rather than a business, by which I mean the thirties, forties and fifties; I liked especially reading about the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Red Sox and tended to feel contemptuous of the Yankees who seemed to win everything too easy. Nevertheless I became a Yankee rooter for the duration of this movie, which was over too quickly. Cooper and Teresa Wright were unsurpassable as Lou and Eleanor Gehrig and after a while the baseball element was incidental to their enduring love. Nothing less than ten stars will do for this truly moving motion picture.

Didn't think i would like this movie but i am a Gary Cooper fanatic since Meet John Doe. He certainly didn't deceive me here...what fantastic acting.....this guy is phenomenal. Never was a Theresa Wright fan until this movie. She played it with style and conviction. Good story that provided us with humour as well as sadness. Just happy Sam Wood chose not to show Lou Gherig dying. The scene where Lou meets little BILLY all grown up and the end.....had me in a turmoil. ELSA J ANNSEN would go on to play another mother in 1943 s blockbuster SO PROUDLY WE HAIL. She registers emotions so capably you just want to cuddle her. Walter Brennan is well Walter Brennan...he didn't received 3 Oscars for nothing. All and all a fast paced well made movie that will pull at your heart strings whether you like baseball or not.
