The Last Unicorn Trailers

From a riddle-speaking butterfly, a unicorn learns that she is supposedly the last of her kind, all the others having been herded away by the Red Bull. The unicorn sets out to discover the truth behind the butterfly's words. She is eventually joined on her quest by Schmendrick, a second-rate magician, and Molly Grue, a now middle-aged woman who dreamed all her life of seeing a unicorn. Their journey leads them far from home, all the way to the castle of King Haggard.

The Last Unicorn is an oddity. It's certainly a darker movie than others aimed at kids, though it is hardly dark enough to affect adults. It doesn't look bad but has hardly aged well, all things considered. It tells its story pretty effectively but is slow and frankly pretty boring. In my opinion, the biggest flaws with the movie are results of the time in which it was made. The '60s, '70s, and early '80s are widely acknowledged as a lousy period for animation, and The Last Unicorn suffers from just about every cliche we've come to know from that time: flat visuals, jerky character movement, limited facial animations, awkward voice acting, bad music, and more. The film's animation is pretty good for its time, but I can only say that in reference to the period in which it was made, rather than strictly its age; for example, 1959's Sleeping Beauty used a similar animation style to much better effect. I also do not feel that the soundtrack, performed by the rock band America, has aged well at all. The film grinds to a halt each time a new song starts, and none of them help move the story along. This film has no reason to be a musical, but it is one, despite the fact that the leads aren't very good singers when they join in.Of course, it isn't all bad. While I do have issues with the animation overall, there are glimpses of something really interesting. The story book style of the visuals is distinctive, and the simple, single-minded drive of the lead is strangely engaging. I believe that The Last Unicorn would benefit from a remake. There is interesting material here; it just isn't being used to its full potential. Instead, the film stands as an example of a pretty good movie from a poor environment.

The Last Unicorn is a Rankin and Bass cartoon I used to watch all the time when I was a kid, but as I rewatched it now as a grown-up, I'm shocked that I'd been able to make it through. It's scary! The animation looks very similar to The Flight of Dragons, and just as in that childhood favorite, there are very frightening mythical creatures that might frighten the little ones in the audience.Mia Farrow voices the title character, and after she overhears a man saying she's the last unicorn on Earth, she sets out to prove him wrong and find more of her kind. Along the way, she meets a singing butterfly, voiced by Robert Keith, who channels Robin Williams's Genie character brilliantly; a magician, voiced by a tired-sounding Alan Arkin; a prince voiced by an equally tired-sounding Jeff Bridges; and an old hag, voiced by Tammy Grimes. Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lee, Rene Auberjonois, Keenan Wynn, and the legendary Paul Frees join the cast as well. There are a few songs, most of them sung in the background by America, but one of them is actually sung by Mia! Admittedly, I am a Mia Farrow fan, but objectively she's wonderful in this movie, and not only because the cartoon unicorn actually looks like her! She's caring, frightened, determined, hopeful, and sweet. If you missed the opening credits and didn't catch the year of release, you'd swear the lead was voiced by Gwyneth Paltrow—Mia sounds exactly like her! They both have an affected accent and a waver in their voice; halfway through The Lost Unicorn, I found myself lost in a fantasy of a 1990s remake of The Great Gatsby planned only in my head: Gwyneth Paltrow as Daisy, Brad Pitt as Gatsby, and Beau Bridges as Nick. But I digress.Parts of the cartoon are sad, scary, sweet, funny, or strange. But if you like your cartoons with a tinge of weirdness, like Thumbelina, Quest for Camelot, The Secret of NIMH, or The Flight of Dragons, you'll probably like this one. The all-star cast is definitely worth a watch, and even if you don't completely fall in love with Mia, I guarantee you'll find her extremely sweet.

I do not suppose there is a great need for me to review the content on the movie in great detail for I am sure many others have done a much better job. I will review the spiritual aspect of the movie.I first watched this movie as a small child at a friends house, they are rich and had a giant screen with a good projector. It was always a joy to watch movies there. This cartoon happened to be one.The people who owned the giant screen are fanatical Christians, Pharasees if you will. I am surprised they let us young vulnerable children watch this spiritually corrupt movie. The Unicorn obviously represent a spirit or a Demon. That is made clear from the begging, a good spirit of course which would naturally make us wander if this movie had Islamic notions. The wizard is no more than a natural man who is in touch with a witch who uses black magick through deception, much like in this modern day. This type of Magic uses fallen angels which is why I am surprised the people who let me watch this, let me watch it. Black magick is a sin worthy of death and is documented in the law of Moses. How ever, the Harpy has its way with her. Eventually the natural man does conjure up spirits, at this point he has become a black magician, he has replaced the witch. This movie is more than likely new age and is certainly made to entertain the younger minds darkly. There is a sin in the bible called the unforgivable sin and the magician in this movie commits it. When he turns the water into wine, he does it through deception and wickedness. That is what they accuses Jesus of doing and hence it is the sin that can not be forgiven. Again this is not a good thing for Christians to show to infants. The skeleton is clearly a deceased person who desires to return to sin.The king is obviously Satan and so is the red bull. The rest of the unicorns that are in the sea represent possessed humans. The sea often represents mankind in the bible. Not so pretty now is it...how ever, the idea that the unicorns are set free is a concept of demonic liberation which again is Islamic. This is the idea that Jinn can be saved. As a complete piece, this movie is no better than your modern Disney movies for they all represent some kind of witch craft. So this is the true meaning of the last unicorn.

In 1982 I was 10 and saw this movie when it first came out and I still recall how enchanting this film is. It's a beautifully mesmerizing animation and story. I love unicorns - and I think this movie is one of the reasons I still love the magical mythological creature. This is one of those films that is great for watching with your kids.If you enjoyed this movie then I would recommend to you the following films that are sorta similar to this film and you may enjoy: "The Secret of NIMH", "The Black Cauldron" and "The Hobbit (TV Movie 1977)".They do not make films like these anymore. These old classic drama animations are some of the best you will ever see.9/10
