I am a die hard science fiction fan and love it when a movie stretches the limits of imagination and though this movie is not the best science fiction movie that I have watched, it is a very good attempt. If science fiction for you means futuristic gadgets, star ships, aliens and super cool visual effects, this is not a movie for you. However, if you are like me who loves sci-fi movies for their plots, imaginations and creativity then you would find this movie highly nourishing to your grey matter. The Discovery starts off with an interesting idea of scientific proof of after life and how it is leading to an epidemic level suicide rate across the globe. After that the story is about two lead characters - Will and Isla. The threads of their lives intertwine amidst more revelations about after life. The climax of the movie is really mind bending and that's when one realizes that every scene up to the point of climax was a great build up to the mystery of after life especially from the point of view of Will. Of course, there are things that could have been better in the movie for example - the acting by lead actors does leave you wanting for more and the screenplay could also have been much better but in my view a sci-fi movie with average acting and average screenplay is also a must watch as long as it leaves you wondering about the possibilities that science can one day open up and the answers we may find.

The beautifully directed and acted movie sends out a powerful message with the implication that suicide is not the way to reach an afterlife, which is indeed an alternate reality from our own reality, where we get a second chance to correct our mistakes. A thorough exploration and masterful presentation makes the movie a masterpiece.

Will, who is against his fathers Thomas experiments, says something along the lines of:"whatever purpose we have in this life it is not about killing."It is about compromise and working out a solution acceptable to all. We have to learn what we are supposed to learn right here, in this place, not the one after. In reality there is of course overwhelming evidence for life after death. The character Thomas is the movie version of Raymond Moody.Having myself experienced an NDE at age 7 I can tell you that the afterlife has nothing to do with being stuck in a Groundhog Day style loop of trying to rectify mistakes of your past. But it is a cute idea.

This movie started out in quite a compelling fashion. It seemed to pose the ultimate question, would people be willing to live if they were sure that there was something after death. The implications and moral dilemmas that proof of an afterlife seemed to be a subject that was new and unique. I was hooked. Then something happened, the film seemed to run out of steam half way and got completely off its rails. All of a sudden, it became a sappy love story (as if people can fall in love so easily) and all the scientific ethical dilemmas were thrown out and the story lost all that made it interesting.Acting is, of course, top notch with this cast. Directing and cinematography were quite good also. What the film lacked thoroughly was a script with a solid story that told an engaging story from beginning to end.
