While countless people have chosen suicide to reset their existence, others try to decide what it all means. Among them is Dr. Harbor's son Will, who has arrived at his father's isolated compound with a mysterious young woman named Isla. Will, who is against his fathers Thomas experiments, says something along the lines of:"whatever purpose we have in this life it is not about killing."It is about compromise and working out a solution acceptable to all. We have to learn what we are supposed to learn right here, in this place, not the one after. In reality there is of course overwhelming evidence for life after death. The character Thomas is the movie version of Raymond Moody.Having myself experienced an NDE at age 7 I can tell you that the afterlife has nothing to do with being stuck in a Groundhog Day style loop of trying to rectify mistakes of your past. But it is a cute idea.

Funny for a movie all about death it made me think of and celebrate life. I don't want to give much away.. at all...but this is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I found all of the characters very believable. I especially related to Isla as a broken woman searching for belonging. Amazing the lengths to which grief can make us go. I will think about this movie for a long time to come. I do want to address the idea of the afterlife and while I am a Christian I tend to be very open minded about what exactly is out there. I do think that some people with the same faith as mine may not find this movie as good as I did as the ideas proposed would clash with their belief systems. I will close by saying I loved the love story in this and the ending was perfect.

Finally got around to watching it. It ultimately plays upon the fractured reality thesis, one i've grown more and more suspicious of as time passes. What if when you die, you merge with yourself elsewhere until there can be only one. The irony being, it's all one. Infinity is not time unending, it is the 1 that exists amongst no other numbers. A singular intelligence that has been fragmented within the illusion of time that entropy causes. Combining these two premises is not easy. But it does yield the possibility, that infinity is merely the process of being (a kind of evolution) and there is much beyond. That's my take. It's a bit of a slow movie, definitely for the thinkers. To say that we are the universe understanding itself, is still valid. This is what i mean by '1' It also supports suicide is sin, simply because.. you'll just repeat the same mistake until you learn what the pain is trying to teach you. Which, really, really, annoys me. I sure as hell don't seek to understand these things through convenient rationality or bias. I don't 'choose to believe'. But logic is a pickle, it needs cheese.Although in this review i have mostly talked about a thought experiment, that is what this movie summons from within. It makes you think and it makes you think very deeply.Definitely not for everyone but maybe one day it will be.

Solid film with an interesting story. The concept is great and probably a lot of people relate to it as it asks one of the biggest questions of humanity. Is there an after life and if there is how does it look like? I like that this is only the plot outline for something that goes very philosophical and even deeper. The twists were fine, and in the end it had a little bit of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" spice. Acting wise everybody was on the top of their game. Nothing award worthy but believable enough. Jason Segel nicely played against his typical character and it was definitely an inspired choice to cast him in the leading role of this film. Rooney Mara was great as usual. She really is one of the most interesting and versatile actresses around these days. I liked Robert Redford, who wasn't doing anything too special but still absolutely right for his role. Jesse Plemons is always a plus. The screenplay was good and it had some really nice shots. Its a film that works for its characters and story more than any effects. It has a nice moral and good ending. Sometimes it was maybe a little slow and not all of the final conclusion makes sense but especially he last scene really hit me at the right spots.
