Besides the fact that Romain Duris is a hotty, this movie was an adventure to watch. It basically had no plot, but was so interesting because it showed one man's willingness to try something totally crazy, like hanging out with gypsies in Romania. It was a joy to watch his struggle to communicate when he didn't understand the language. I admire this character's bravery to open himself up to a new experience and embrace it with such gusto. Kinda motivates me to seek out some adventure in my own life. (Like, learning how to dance like a gypsy, for one.) ***IMHO not appropriate for kiddos--due to, ummm, the sexualized nature of much of the content.

Powerful, thrilling, full of life. It introduces you to the very simple, yet full of emotions life of the gypsies. It outlines their raw behavior, their spirited way of being, their unique way of dealing with problems and pain and, most of all, their charming culture (those scenes with dancing gypsies made me crave to learn dance like that). The plot isn't very consistent - just a French guy who is looking for his father's favorite singer. But this is not the kind of movie in which the plot matters too much. Here, the plot is just a plea for the director to send Stéphane, a Paris citizen, to a Romanian gypsy hamlet in the middle of nowhere and get the chance to discover a whole new way of living. The relation between Stéphane and Sabina does not turn the film into a romantic story. It covers just the right amount of the scenes; it's the salt and pepper the movie needs. All this being said,I can only add Gadjo Dilo is surely a film worth watching.

Take a sparse rural Pennsylvania countryside village through a year-long drought, hit it with a category 3 hurricane, maintain a consistent overcast sky long after you sprinkle down a good New England snowfall, and you'll get the feel of the Romanian sticks and rural ghettos that make the setting of "Gadjo Dilo". Those who live by the cliché "times have changed" may want to kick themselves when they view this film. "Gadjo Dilo" is a good film for those intrigued by a trial-and-error gauntlet through the inhospitable and the discouraged for that will o' the wisp ever-present within one's grasp. Of course, you'll have to endure Gypsy culture and cleanliness made so absent that even the common slob might reconsider housecleaning. Like "Twelve Angry Men", there's a lopsided protagonist/antagonist displacement that transcends into protagonist unanimity, except that the feared gadje becomes a mild pincushion for criticism and then a source of amusement and glee.I like this foreign film for having a realistic manner of telling a story as well as a visual test to those who wonder what would happen if you ventured unprepared into a backwoods world of untouchables.
