This movie would have been just another ho-hum violent western, but Bill Pullman's performance was outstanding. He encapsulated the grit and guts of many in the old west. Supposedly, this story was based on an actual account of Lefty Brown, and as such, it captured the ruggedness, toughness, and tenacity of the western pioneer in a powerful way. If anyone likes westerns as I, this is one movie you will remember for many years to come. This was best performance of Bill Pullman to date. I highly recommend it.

If you are in the mood for a western, and you've been scrolling through your Netflix/Amazon/Roku for ten minutes and really don't want to watch "The Quick and the Dead" for the fourteenth time, this might be a worthy choice for you.It's watchable. It features pretty much what you'd find in any standard western, a big shootout, an independent widow who is losing her ranch, seedy politicians, and lots and lots of scenery.What it doesn't feature is Jim Beaver in a role that would have been picture perfect for him. Pullman did a reasonably decent job as a sidekick, but Pullman isn't a sidekick. Thirty years ago, Slim Pickens would have been cast in this role.There isn't a single memorable thing in this movie, and you'll likely never watch it a second time, but it's entertaining enough so you won't feel like you wasted your afternoon.

I really like Westerns and this was slow and very boring. Could have been edited by 45 Minutes.

I watched this at home on DVD from my public library. I like the actors, they are all good. But that is the only good reason to watch this.In a typical western, like this one, it starts in 1889 Montana with a good guy getting killed, followed by a long and winding search for justice, and in the end a big gunfight with lots of people shooting at each other.I have watched quite a number of westerns over the years so I am familiar with the genre but this one doesn't really add anything new. On the positive side it does feature beautiful Montana with its wide open spaces and rolling terrain. On the negative side scenes are drawn out, most of the movie moves very slowly. See it if you are a die-hard fan of westerns, otherwise you may find it more than a bit tedious.
