One of the most classic and revered stories of all time, Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan returns to the big screen for a new generation. Tarzan and Jane face a mercenary army dispatched by the evil CEO of Greystoke Energies, a man who took over the company from Tarzan's parents, after they died in a plane crash in the African jungle.

The only thing I want to point out is that writer/producer is German, so the comment about Americanization is out of line. The movie wasn't canon or great but I've seen worse interpretations of Tarzan. Other people were put off by the science fiction aspect, but there were examples of science fiction in some of ERBs stories. (After all, he did give us Barsoom.)

While adaptations of the stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs' hero vary in quality, most of them are very entertaining on their own terms. 'Tarzan' fares the weakest quite easily of the lot, there is very little if any Edgar Rice Burroughs in sight but worse is how poorly it fares as a standalone.'Tarzan' is not completely irredeemable. The jungle itself is rendered very handsomely with nice vivid colours, while the music score has the right balance of spirit-rousing energy and whimsy (not so sure about the songs though which seemed like they belonged somewhere else). While the acting was not good at all, Andy Wareham does provide some effectively gruff menace to Tublat in the very little he has to do, while the film finally comes to life in a climax that does have some legitimate tension and urgency. However, the rest of the animation is poor. The characters just look stiff and like they were lifted out of a very low-budget PlayStation 2 game while their facial expressions were either forced (Jane) or lifeless (Tarzan). Very little better can be said about the performances sadly either, there has never been a blander or charisma-free Tarzan than the one of Kellan Lutz, while Trevor St John goes through the motions as the one-dimensional and quite pantomimic Clayton. On the other side of the acting spectrum, there is also Craig Garner's irritatingly whiny younger Tarzan, Spencer Locke's gratingly contrived Jane and Les Bubb over-compensates amateurishly and mugs as Jim Porter. The dialogue is embarrassingly clunky and nearly always sounds awkward, and there was really no need whatsoever for the over-used and over-explanatory narration, which was a classic case of more show, less tell, telling us what we can already see on screen and it got annoying fast.Storytelling was a mess, with a particularly ponderous first hour, an underdeveloped and chemistry-less romance between Tarzan and Jane (an enormous problem when it takes up so much of the film) and the whole convoluted and out-of-place nonsense with the meteorite subplot. It honestly felt like a short film stretched and bloated to suit feature length, and even the gorillas and jungle wildlife felt thrown in and randomly inserted. The characters are little more than vapidly written, one-dimensional and annoying stereotypes. All in all, less than inspired, or even good. Has even less swing than 2016's 'The Legend of Tarzan'. 3/10 Bethany Cox

This movie could benefit from some serious therapy. As near as I can tell it is actually two movies joined together only the bad judgement and odd values of Reinhard Klooss, the writer and director.Such a huge amount of energy for such a strange result!! One film, the one I liked, and the reason I watched to the end, was a sweet (animated) take on the basic Tarzan arc, Tarzan grows up in the jungle, meets Jane, yada yada. Yes it has been done before but the animation and story for this movie (of the two which, combined, make the entire schizoid movie) were satisfying, sincere and fun. Had the movie stayed there, it would have been a decent film. And then there is the second film stuck into the crock pot. Almost as if the writer had seen Lord of the Rings once too often, suddenly a army appears in the jungle out of nowhere, led by a nasty corporate type chasing a very annoying meteor. Ugh. Double ugh.Again nothing here a good shrink could not fix over 200 hours of therapy. And maybe that same shrink could find out why the writer/director felt compelled to kill Tarzan's 'mother" in a scene of gratuitous violence totally out of place in a kid's film?

I do not understand the bad reviews. Now, I have never seen any other TARZAN movies, this is my first, and so perhaps I think it is so good because I have no other movie to compare it to, a movie which may be better. However, I absolutely adore this movie. I am fascinated by the intelligence of apes, as well as the traditions of tribal peoples. I also like sci-fi, and am a big doctor who fan. And so, the idea of a person being brought up by apes in the African jungle sounded perfect for me, especially once I heard about the sci-fi aspect of the meteor. In my opinion, this movie is excellent, and would rate it 10000000 stars if I could. I am not sure why the other reviews are so negative, as this must be one of the best movies I have ever seen :)
