In case you don't know, the writer/director of 'Surveillance' is Jennifer (daughter of renowned master of the surreal David) Lynch. So, if you've seen anything from Blue Velvet to Mullholland Drive (or any other of 'Daddy' Lynch's work, you'll probably know what to expect from his offspring.Like her father, she delves deep into places most of us would rather not go. Here, two FBI agents arrive in a small town, hot on the trail of a couple of wanted serial killers. Unfortunately, they're too late to stop a spree of killings, but do their best to piece together the carnage from the handful of survivors who have made it out alive. The characters are a wide and varied bunch, but, what unites them is that they're all pretty unlikable. Yes, there is a little girl who brings a touch of innocence to the film and – rightly so – she even won an award for her performance. But the rest of them are pretty dark – even the ones who you're supposed to root for! Much of the tale is told through the eyes of the survivors, making the film mainly a series of flashbacks which are open to interpretation. You get a fair amount of (what I'd call) 'Pulp Fiction-esque' dialogue which shows us more about the characters, rather than speeds the plot along. This can either work well, or drag the story along. I'm glad to say that it does the job here. Again, like her father, the dialogue is pretty cringe worthy to listen to, largely due to its content and how awkward and uncomfortable it makes the (few innocent) characters feel. However, unlike David Lynch's films, this one is a little more straight forward. His tend to be very open to interpretation, whereas Surveillance has a definitely 'beginning, middle and end.' Yes, it can be a little jumbled sometimes, but you shouldn't have any trouble keeping up, especially if you're in the mood for something very dark and twisted.

CA., CALI, COLOMBIA and ORLANDO, FL Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David Lynch (Mullholand Dr....Yes, I can see that!) You can rest assured, with each passing year, Ms. Lynch's name will grow ever more prominent! Several friends have rated this 6*. Hmmm, up front, for the record, 9*; loud and clear, front and center. My prognostication: SURVEILLANCE will soon attain "Cult Classic" status, with legions of aficionados. You heard it here first, from the Id of Dr. Morbius! Now I'll tell you why. Almost from the very onset, the underlying tension, the nail-biting, sparks-flying friction between characters is hypnotic and entrancingly numbing. Surveillance is beyond dark, to the point of being "Non-commercial"! Now, is that good? Well, you'll have to decide that for yourself! ***** Very MINOR SPOILERS Coming Up! ******Lots of reviewers have mentioned the "surprise ending". IMHO there are quite obviously 2 back-to-back, from-out-of-left-field plot twists at the end of the movie. Well 3, if you count the OOPS! I can't really say, now can I? Ms. Lynch is really up to snuff on her movie-making technique. Editing, camera-angles, photography, close-ups, and pacing; SUPERB, ALL of them! WOW! SURVEILLANCE wasn't a .22 Caliber bullet to my brain it was a .45! Blew my mind in one fell swoop! But this film has "POLARIZING" written all over it! From sincere, soul-searching reviewers, we should see lots of either 8 to 10* ratings, or 2* and 3* ones. The violence, although mostly not extremely graphic, nor taking up much on-screen time, considering the genre, was so pathologically twisted, I'm sure it'll prove too just intense for the likings of many. For this reason, I've had a change of heart, or let's say GUTS, to 8*......ENJOY/DISFRUTELA!Any comments, questions or observations, in English o en Español, are most welcome! [email protected]
... View MoreThis movie shows just how far as a society, which is reflected in its movies, that we have fallen. It is as disgusting and worthless a movie as one could ever possibly image. The pointless blood and gore that fill it and the supposed surprise ending which is simply Freddy Kruger gone hog wild are symptoms of the failure of Hollywood to come up with anything approaching a redeeming movie. To say that this movie sucks would be the understatement of the year. If you watch this and then feel that you enjoyed it then I think that would say a lot about you as a person. I will be seeking to find out who wrote, produced and directed this piece of trash so that in the future I can avoid anything they ever do again. It is a violent retread built on top of a repeat built on top of an endless flow of sickening and disgusting Hollywood movies that are supposed to sicken and shock us into a state where we think we were entertained by the end of the movie. I wasn't! StocktonRob
... View MoreMy hands were a little shakier than usual when I pushed this DVD into the player – too bitter were the memories of "Boxing Helena", even more than a decade after watching that film, which would have made Ed Wood blush in embarrassment. The fact here in Germany the film was labeled valuable", didn't help things either.Seeing the FBI agent sipping coffee while riding down a "strange highway" at the beginning of the movie, the question that came to mind was: "Jennifer, have you seen Twin Peaks too"? Had the interrogations taken place in a little diner, it wouldn't have come as a surprise. It wouldn't have been a surprise if Kyle McLachlan and the dwarf from the Red Room would have made a cameo. Question is: did Jennifer Lynch consciously rip-off her fathers style? Perhaps not; perhaps it's simply Lynch-DNA.There has been much harsh criticism about Pullman hamming it up beyond the axe-wielding range of Jack Nicholson, probably from people who either haven't seen any (David) Lynch movies or don't like them. Anybody bitching about Dennis Hopper or William Dafoe pouring their fat into the fire is off my Christmas list for good. Why Pullman doesn't get to inhale some mystery drug or shoot his head off with a shotgun is beyond my knowledge, but it's clearly a tribute to Dad pardon, a tribute to David Lynch all along. What leaves viewers (or better, the seasoned David Lynch viewers) a bit cheesed off about the Ending is the fact that Jenifer Lynch might hold them for fools. The film pretends to be clever, as if the director really expected somebody to burst out at the end: "You mean the real FBI agents were dead from the beginning? Gosh, Jennifer! You is smart!" But she's not going to hear it from me.The ultimate question, as ever: is it a bad film? Nope, by no means; like "Saw" Part One to 15 weren't bad films if you're a gore-hound, or "So High" wasn't bad if you're a stoner. It's a good road movie. It's a good bucket of gore. It's always good to see Michael Ironside and it's even better to see him die. The die-hard David Lynch fans will nod benevolently towards the child – and wait for Jennifer to make her own debut-film.3 points from 10 – one for Michael Ironside, one because I'm a bit of a gore-hound and one for did I mention that Jennifer is David Lynch daughter?
