Stake Land (2010) is a nice horror flick, though kinda bland. It tries to go on a new modern take, where horror movies don't need to be explained, they just need to happen. I miss the old times where horror movies tried to make sense, to make it seem real, even trying to explain it scientifically.Stake Land is alright. It's dark, grim. Nothing spooky. And don't tell me those are vampires; they look more like zombies to me, but I guess zombies are an overused concept, so, hey, who am I to judge! The characters are likeable. Acting is fine. Plot is OK.Fine movie to watch when you're looking for nothing.
... View MoreYeah this movie isn't all that great, but some are calling it the worst horror film of the decade, but I wouldn't call it that, not by a long shot, that honor goes to Zombie Nation (no I don't mean the TV series) that movie is a steaming pile of crap and more then deserves its rating of 2.1/10. Anyways the thing I didn't like the most about Stake Land is that it has a lot of plot holes, like Mister who is supposed to be some expert hunter, yet he goes and leaves a sleeping, pregnant girl alone, I mean come on! And the sister wasn't having any trouble keeping up, but she just suddenly decides to commit suicide?!? She was with Mister and Martin, so wasn't able to see that the girl had fallen behind, so she wasn't doing it to help her get away. Also Mister had been obsessed with getting both himself and Martin to New Eden, but when they are finally within reach of it, he just goes off and leaves him? Would of made way more sense for Mister to make sure he at least got there, even if Mister no longer wanted to stay. Plus the dialogue just didn't feel natural a lot of the time, seemed like people said things that one wouldn't actually say. Also the tone of the film was very serious, it wasn't trying to be one of those "so stupid it's funny" movies, it was trying to be serious, yet it was very cheesy at times, like that cop saluting Mister as he rode off into the distance, I actually laughed out loud at that. I realize this movie was done on a small budget, but still the really cheap sound affects detracted from the film as well, as did the many different firearms mistakes. However considering the small budget I was impressed with the quality of the special affects. I think this movie's strongest point is the character development, that was pretty well written. I was genuinely sad when Martin had to kill the girl.
... View MoreVery Low Budget and Surprisingly Atmospheric and Poetic, this is a Somewhat Different Take on the Vampire-Zombie-Post Apocalyptic Genre that has Seen its Share and it is Refreshing that this is Not More of the Same. Sure it is the Same in Parts but is Crafted in a Stylish New Way with its Gloom and Doom Rendered with a Soft Musical Score and Beautiful Cinematography. The Movie has a Soft Bite but is Hardly Soft. There is A Lot of Expected Kills and Bloodletting but these are Punctuations Solidifying the Heartfelt Story of Survival, Bonding, Family and Terror. Religious Undertones are Present but Not Driven by Any Hammering. Just, Once Again, a Soft Sell. This is One of the Better Entries in the Overloaded Genre and Manages to be Apart from the Saturated Gore of Most. It Doesn't Put these Creatures In Your Face at Every Turn but are a Menacing Threat Throughout. It is Director Jim Mickle's Steady and Symphonic Hand Here that Makes this an Underrated and Overlooked Horror that has been Drowned in the Deluge of Vampires, Zombies, and Post Apocalyptic Movies. This is Simply...One that's Worth a Watch for Fans of the Genre and those that are Usually Not Willing to Take a Chance Among So Many of These Types that are Out There.
... View MoreTo be perfectly honest this movie would probably be received better if it was not advertised as a vampire movie. Because I think most people, when they think about vampire, think some handsome man or sexy women who lure people into a dark alley and feed on them. The creatures in Stake Land are nothing of the sort. They are dark, vicious, gruesome monsters which are more like a rabid dog than a person. And boy do they do their job well. The movie itself has a sort of authenticity to it which you wont see in most vampire movies. For some reason the whole thing feels almost real and maybe that is because it combines the ruthlessness of vampires with the heinous sadism of some humans to create a melting pot of post apocalyptic waste land. But there are good people as well and even some creatures, such as children vampires, so called scamps, which do not seem all too hostile. So if you want to see the best vampire movie ever then forget all which you know about vampires and get immersed in a cruel, dark post apocalyptic world.
