St. Vincent is a great movie. It's funny comedy but also has a surprising emotional depth. I've always liked Bill Murray and also here. To be fair he plays the same character he usually does, but he does it so well. He's the bitter sarcastic jerk but who deep down is a good person. St. Vincent has many funny moments and dare I say all of them come from Murray, close to all. But this movie I would describe as kind of a dark comedy or maybe even little tragic comedy. Because the drama is actually most gripping. There is much more depth in the story than I was expecting. In the end the movie is of the feel good genre and so there are some cheesy moments. But it's not a problem as the movie is still not too predictable or overly sentimental. Newcomer Jaeden Lieberher does great. The character we the viewer should feel most sympathy for and one does. Usually I'm not a huge fan of Melissa McCarthy but here she fits her character perfect. Nothing of her slapstick overacting which is what I associate her with. Mostly her character is serious and sad in a emotional way. Her funny moments come when she's playing of Bill Murray's grumpy old man with her own sarcasm. Of the main characters its Naomi Watts who brings the shortest straw. Her performance is alright even if I can't stop noticing the accent. It's just that her character is the least interesting and also feels like the least important. St. Vincent is a very good heartwarming movie. It has humour, a well written story, good actors and characters.

Bill Murray hands in a bravura performance as "St. Vincent" in this 2014 drama also starring Melissa McCarthy, Naomi Watts, Chris O'Dowd, and Jaeden Lieberher, all of whom are dynamite.Murray is curmudgeon who drinks, smokes, hangs out at bars and the race track, and owes money to thugs. He's so drunk one night that he backs his car into his fence, which he blames on his new neighbor Maggie's (McCarthy) movers. Maggie is divorced with a young son, Oliver, and one night when she is late coming home from her job, Oliver winds up at Vincent's when he asks to use the phone. Vincent charges her for babysitting, and then agrees to watch the kid after school for a certain amount per hour.Vincent and Oliver don't realize it yet, but they're crazy about each other. Vincent takes Oliver to the track, and Oliver's picks win big. He takes him to his neighborhood bar, and he introduces him to a pregnant Russian prostitute, Daka (Watts), who continues to have sex with him. He teaches the boy, who is on the small side, to fight the bullies.Vincent also visits a beautiful woman in a nursing home and pretends he's her doctor.Maggie, meanwhile, has to fight her ex-husband for full custody. This is such a wonderful story, with laugh out loud moments and tears. Bill Murray is fantastic and should have been nominated for an Oscar. He plays drunk, sick, nice, mean and everything in between. Children in films can be annoying, but Lieberher is wonderful. Naomi Watts does an excellent Russian accent and is quite funny. This was more of a dramatic role for Melissa McCarthy and she handled it beautifully.Director Theodore Melfi's direction is solid and keeps the film going. A heartwarming film, perfect for the holidays and after all the chaos of the election. Lots of fun, and a film about the power of love.

I've got to say this one of my favourite movies in the last 10 years. First of all it tells such an amazing story, and has everything you would want in a movie. Considering I don't usually get emotional at movies there where parts of this I was holding back the tears. The performance from Bill Murray is outstanding, and the actor playing 'Oliver' the main kid is something special and he has a very bright future ahead. The film is also hilarious at some brilliant moments of comedy, however the way the film builds to do the speech at the end, and the relationship both Vincent and Oliver have is incredible. I don't usually write reviews, and know this film has had its nominations, however still believe the credit it has received is no where near what it deserves. All I can say is if you're looking for a fun, heart warming film that makes you have a different perspective on life this is the one. I've seen it twice and could watch this over and over, im telling you, you will not regret it.

So this is how modern America see Saintliness. Yet another moronic entry into the wretched 'Bad Santa' genre. Yep folks commin' your way is a feel good, sweet and warm, movie about a slob, a boozy drunk, a bad language man (if you went into businesses or banks and spoke to employees like this bod you'd be arrested or shown the door!), among other things he's also a gambler, a cheap womanizer and tobacco abuser - what other kind of a bloke is there we can all look up to?. This seems to be about as close as it gets in too many movies these days. It's OK that we've seen it all before (there's very little new left to be found out there anyway...) but, it's not OK that it can't all be done a little better. There are some good scenes that creep into moments of this show (scenes with Murray's Dementia suffering wife for example). Otherwise it's unfortunately aimed squarely at those who can be kept happy with the sub generic vulgar type 'cuteness' that gets thrown at us too often nowadays. Maybe there's no need to improve scripts - seems they've managed to dumb down most audiences to the point they can still make money from junk anyway. While it's interesting to see him, our iconic Bill has done this role so many times he just walks through it all (by the numbers). Oh well, is it likable? - some will, some wont, I didn't....but, it does also have some sparse but likable bouncy original score music by Theodore Shapiro - that almost gets lost amongst the now expected, 'top-of-the-pop-hits' that make up so many promo type sound tracks today. Pity, would have enjoyed hearing better use of what was scored for the movie.
