Smiley Face Trailers

Jane, a struggling but perpetually stoned actress, has a busy day ahead. She has several important tasks on her list, including buying more marijuana. Even though she already has a good start on the day's planned drug use, she eats her roommate's pot-laced cupcakes and embarks on a series of misadventures all over Los Angeles.

This film is not remotely funny. The main character is really stoned, she acts like a complete moron (and I mean complete) and she ruins everything she touches. It certainly deglamorizes cannabis use, while at the same time relishing in it. The only problem with the film, and it is a major problem, an overwhelming one even, is that there is nothing about it that it is funny. There are no jokes, there is no wit, nothing amusing or surprising happens; she's just really really stoned and stupid. That's it. I guess you can consider that a spoiler.I only watched this cos Gregg Araki's early films are wonderful obscene punk queer anomalies. I had faith in him. He let me down. He let us all down.

If you cannot follow these two rules, you will have a difficult time enjoying Smiley Face. Ready? Rule # 1 : Do not ask any questions. Rule #2: If you have a thinking cap, take it off! And those are the rules! Too many people "don't get it." That's because there's nothing to get, it's a stoner movie, people. And not a bad one at all, with that being said. The 2007 comedy stars, come on, clap those hands...it's Anna Farris! How can you not like the adorable, cutesy Anna? Director Greg Araki takes us on a trip on how she got from point A, to point Z. Point A begins our story, in her apartment, where she's just consumed a truck load of pot laced cupcakes. Point Z, well, she's up there on a ferris wheel, and not having any clue on how she got up there. So Smiley Face will take you by the hand, and fill you in on all her misadventures, and her wild and crazy day, which is nothing less then unpredictable. Her day is anything but boring. After directing the incredibly disturbing 2004 Mysterious Skin, I think our director decided to do something a little more...lighter and charming, and he does it with superb results. Well, I thought so, many may disagree. If you're missing any point to it all, it's just to take time to stop and smell the roses. I think. And hats of to our narrator, now part of the departed. Rest in peace, my dear friend!

Allow me to preface: I don't use pot, let alone any (currently) illegal drugs. There are movies for people who do: Half Baked, Harold & Kumar – pick one, Pineapple Express and, yes, even The Big Lebowski. Now we can add Smiley Face to the mix. This movie appears to be the perfect stoner movie. 100% from beginning to end and finally, from a girl's POV. I think that's the edge they were looking for. And they found the perfect host: Anna Faris.I loved her in Scary Movie. She was okay in the extremely small guest appearance in Lost in Translation. Here, she really, REALLY, did look high from shot one to the end. Honestly, it was good acting. The movie, which was as aimless as Napoleon Dynamite, follows Jane F., who's already baked, eats some more pot-filled baked cupcakes and her mission to get moneys owed to her dealer while delivering a rare and expensive Marxist book. Literally, she can barely stand, let allow handle the misadventures that involve an acting audition, a union outcry, a cop interrogation and her skull-(loving) roommate who shares my name. Will she grow? Will she do the right thing? Will she sober herself enough to say something tangible? You'll have to watch. But, suffice to say, this is a somewhat funny film with numerous indie & b-list stars and worth a viewing. It's nowhere near the quality or humor as above mentioned films (Harold & Kumar, The Big Lebowski, Half-Baked, Pineapple Express or even the pot-inviting Scary Movie) but it's held up by Anna who literally and absolutely looked shitfaced throughout.

Anna Faris really fits in this kind of role: a crazy girl. Smiley Face has some funny moments that and tells a story about a girl (Jane) who loves to get stoned. She lives for the drug and her lack of compromising with life is enviable.John Krasinski's character is boring and shouldn't be in this movie. It was only useful for more jokes coming from Jane, which were really funny along with the escaping scenes. Also it deserves a decent rating because of its originality. Come on dudes, it's hard to find a similar movie to this one nowadays. Sadly Faris' facial expressions were used so many times in her previous films and this doesn't add much for her as an actress.
