Sheriff Jack Shephard (Timothy Murphy) is in the middle of packing up and leaving town, when a mysterious blood-covered naked boy finds his way into the almost shutdown police station clutching a hunting knife. Now her and his deputies must figure out where the boy came from & what to do with him. The officers seem uncommonly nonchalant given the situations in the film, a small quibble perhaps, but I found that it took me out of the film. Willing to plow on because I found the story intriguing in some small way And it turned out to be a suitable enough time-waster, nothing great, but the ending was really, really bad and the writer/ director dropped the ball on that one.Eye Candy: Natalie Avital & Tara Killian both get topless (but the situations aren't titillating); a lot of naked man ass for the girls My Grade: C-

I wasn't expecting much when I purchased "Shallow Ground" for 5 bucks at my favorite video store. I watched the "Making Of" segment in the special features and learned that the film only cost $72,000.00 to make, now I was REALLY not expecting much... I was quite surprised by the quality of the film, suspenseful, creepy and well acted, director Sheldon Wilson had certainly done his homework. The story evolves around a state forest Ranger station in the middle of nowhere, and some missing people to add a little spice. Now throw in a blood drenched naked guy who doesn't say much, and what you've got is a nice little evening of "blood, guts, boobs & butts"... The film moves along at an even pace and builds the suspense to great effect. Wilson uses the blood (and plenty of it) as a villain itself, which certainly adds to the "horror" of the story. The film does slow down a bit towards the end, and the finale becomes less then stellar, but the cast hold true their characters and convey believable performances. It was a well spent 5 bucks, and "Shallow Ground" delivers an evening of bloody fun.

I could spend all night picking apart why this movie is so terrible. Unfortunately, it's not worth the effort. Let's just say the characters are one-dimensional, the story is confused and contorted beyond all imagining, and the dialog is inane. Added to this, when the story does finally begin to make some sense in the end, a brand new evil appears out of the woods, apparently unrelated to anything else in the movie, and destroys whatever cohesive thought the movie had. I rented this movie based on the glowing reviews on the case. Note to self: Never rent a movie recommended by The Montreal Mirror or Horrorview.com. "Home Media Retailing" says it delivers an "intelligent, terrifying story." No, it doesn't. Saw II, for example, could never be accused of having an "intelligent" story - but it is about a hundred times as intelligent as this thing.Practically every scene features something unbelievable. Not "Oh wow, that's so gross it's unbelievable!", but "nobody would ever say/do that, that's unbelievable!" And the movie doesn't seem to know whether its a supernatural thriller, a "dawn of the dead" movie or a murder mystery. Maybe it thinks it is some of each. In fact, it's just an amateurish stew of competing, dumb plot lines. The movie mostly doesn't make any sense, and when it does, it's predictable and silly.

This movie made no sense whatsoever. What was the point? People getting killed constantly and blood all over the place. What's the point? Why was all this weird stuff happening? Blood coming down the walls, blood coming down windows, blood inside a school bus. Blood, Blood, Blood. Again, what was the point? Just another stupid, pointless movie made by uninspired would-be directors and writers. Why can't people make good movies like the old days? I think the problem is everything has been done and nobody these days is inspired enough to create anything decent. All they do is either make up pointless movies like this one or remake something from the past. Are movies ever going to get good again?
