It's great to find out that there are quite a few die hard fans of 'Safe Men' here on IMDb. Where I 'come from', just about nobody gets this (resulting in ridiculous ratings) - I'm not sure it's a Dutch thing or not. The humor just doesn't appeal to many people, it being too corny and 'soft' or something - but if you like clever details and some heartfelt sentiments borderlining on the ridiculous, it's all there (about the genius of raccoons, for instance). For me, it works plenty. And the film has a great cast to boot as well, their crazy parts come completely naturally to them - yes, that's a compliment. Paul Giamatti, Sam Rockwell, Steve Zahn, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Lerner and Harvey Fierstein: it's all good.Maybe the ending is a little too low key, but it still fits with rest of the script, which is very much made up of silly, dialogue-driven scenes and has nothing to do with credibility or anything like that. Drink a couple of beers or smoke some pot (if you are in the appropriate country and or state) and just sit back and enjoy...A small 8 out of 10.

I don't know how or why this movie got made, and more importantly I don't care. The cast led me to believe this unknown title could not go wrong. You have Giamatti, Rockwell, Zahn, Ruffalo! how could you possibly go wrong with a cast like that? Well, I tried to forgive one horrible dialogue sequence after another but by the time Rockwell starts his romantic side-plot I was ready to smash the screen with anything within reach, I can't remember the last time I ever heard such atrocious dialogue. Do not watch this movie, if you know someone who owns this movie, disassociate yourself from this person and any of their acquaintances. You have been warned.

I don't know what's wrong with most of the reviewers here, but this film isn't even vaguely funny. The plot line sounded like it might be a real hoot, so I thought I'd give it a go. What a mistake. Maybe if you're Jewish and/or are from Rhode Island you'd bust a gut watching it. I got suckered in the same way by "The Hebrew Hammer" which probably was hilarious if you were Jewish but pathetic if you're not.A shame, because the basic story showed some real promise. Somebody with a bit of insight could have made a good indie film from it.For me, it was just boring, pointless and stupid. Some here have called this a "cult" film. They couldn't be more wrong.Waste of time.

This is definitely a love it or be underwhelmed by it comedy. Me personally, it cracks the hell out of me. And most of my friends. Its set in Rhode Island and it seems to perfectly represent the stranger aspects of South Eastern New England humor. There is such a thing, and if you are from Rhode Island or Southeastern Massachusetts, and you are cool, you will have a better shot at finding this film hilarious. The characters are really what makes it great. From Vealchop and Big Fat Bernie Gail and Little Big Fat, to LeFleur and Mr. Blue, this film is literally bursting with excellent characters. I'm not saying you'll definitely like it, but if you do, you'll have a friend for life.
