In the 1400's, Rumpelstiltskin is imprisoned inside a small jade figurine. In modern-day Los Angeles, the recently widowed wife of a police officer, with baby in tow, finds her way into a witch's shop and purchases a certain figurine, resulting in the cackling beast being freed and demanding possession of the baby.

Well let's start by saying that this is a B-Rated movie. No doubt. It is hardly low budget however. The semi-truck chase scene shows that it isn't as low budget as people have reviewed it to be.The pace of story is great in the first act up until the half of the second act. After Rumpel steals a motorcycle from a biker that looks like Kris Kristofferson, it is so awful as far as character acting and story go, that everything goes down hill. While watching, I thought to myself, the actor that plays Rumpel acts exactly like a Ferengi from the Star Trek universe. Come to find out, the actor plays Rom in DS9. Go figure...It is very predictable, filled with one-liners, stiff acting and a played out plot.I will praise the cringing stabbings (The female protagonist stabs Rumpel right in the dome with a kitchen knife as well as shoving a broken broom stick down his throat) the harsh use of the B-Word and the original musical score. All in all I believe it really is an okay movie. I was checked out in the second half of the movie and was engaged in playing Candy Crush.Oh!! And it is hilarious to hear the tag line of this movie uttered by Rumpel in the climax, "This ain't no fairytale." Wow!

Watching Mark Jones's "Rumpelstiltskin", I got the feeling that they knew that they were making kind of a ridiculous movie, and so they decided to be as silly as possible. The movie depicts the impish character of fairy tale fame as a child-stealing demon in medieval England. Turned into a statue, he gets resurrected when a widow wishes to see her murdered husband again, and then tries to steal her baby. Much of the movie has him spouting out Freddy Krueger-style puns. I actually found it neat how he interprets everything in modern LA as something from medieval England. The point is that the movie should not be interpreted as horror, just as completely silly. Not really worth your time.

Rumpelstiltskin is excellent for what it is, and that is a wonderful, cheesy horror movie. If you are a fan of the Leprechaun series, you will most assuredly like this. It has a great mixture of funny dialog and violent humor, and, unlike most films, the bad guy is obviously the only star. This is done by contrasting the boorish, uninteresting people of the film with our colorful, funny anti-hero. Of course, who watches a film like this for dialog or characters? We want to see the bad guy on the screen, doing what he does best. And Rumpelstiltskin does this this quickly, not wasting a lot of time developing other characters, whom we could care less about. However, the characters are certainly not underdeveloped either. You'll just have to see this film for yourself.

I just saw this film for the first time tonight, 9 years after it was made. I was pleasantly surprised, as I was not expecting it to be this good. The Rumpelstiltskin character looked great, and the plot line kept my interest throughout. The makeup was great, and it the minimal use of special effects made this movie much less outrageous than it could have been. It was almost over-the-top, but stopped just in time. It was not very true to the old fairy tale, but took a modern twist on it. Rumplestiltskin was re-awakened 500 years later in the 1990's, and needs a first-born son to steal its soul and set him free. I totally did not expect him to be driving a motorcycle or a semi-truck, but it happens, and it worked. There is a long chase scene where he is driving an oil tanker and spouting out humorous one-liners, until he wrecks it. The only way to kill him is to burn him with fire and straw, but before the protagonists discover this, he kicks some ass and takes a few wicked beatings. This film was hilarious, creepy, and a thoroughly enjoyable take on a classic fairy tale from our youth. I give it a 9 for originality and entertainment value.
