If there's one thing a movie should never do, it's make you bored. Sadly, that's how I felt watching the "Ratchet and Clank" movie. This one is an interesting case as its both a big screen adaptation and a reboot to the famed video game series. Ideally, this would be a good marketing strategy. However, while I can't speak for the game given that I've never played it or any prevous installments, the film fell flat. So there's a furry alien named Ratchet who wants to be a galactic ranger and gets his chance when he meets a defective war bot named Clank. Together, they join the rangers to stop the villainous Chairman Drek and Dr. Nefarious. While the overall aesthetic is unique, the animation doesn't "Wow" me in any way, looking pretty stale in comparison to other animated films or even modern video games and much of the camera work is bland. Same can be said for the humor as the best jokes barely got a chuckle out of me. While Clank, Grim, and Nefarious are the most engaging characters, the rest of the cast, some played by celebrities, offer nothing worth investing. The most annoying was the petty Capt. Qwark, who makes me want to punch him in the face every time he shows up (apparently, he's like that in the games too). The film also doesn't seem to take advantage of all the crazy weapons and tools, most of which were brought in to be simple gags and fan service. Most disappointing of all when you get down to it is that, despite the title, the relationship between Ratchet and Clank doesn't feel nearly as fleshed out as it could've been despite hitting all the familiar beats, probably because they spend a great amount of time apart from each other.Aside from the abundant action and the simple novelty of seeing these characters take on cinematic life, "Ratchet and Clank" is a rusty piece of entertainment, though be fair it's inoffensive and sticks close to the source material as opposed to other video game movies like "Super Mario Bros". I'm sure your kids will get a kick out of it.
... View MoreRatchet and Clank is based off of the classic Playstation video game series of the same name. The game holds a good deal of nostalgia for me, and I remember playing the games with fond memories. They had awesome science fiction settings, great gameplay, and fun puzzles, action and challenges. So when the movie was announced, I was interested. Having finally been able to view the film on home video, however, I was underwhelmed. Ratchet and Clank have never been more bland. The film follows Ratchet, a Lombok who lives on a backwoods planet, fixing ships for customers. He dreams of becoming a galactic ranger, an elite group of defenders. When planets start mysteriously being destroyed by an evil villain named Drek, the galactic rangers need to hire a new member. Luckily for Ratchet, they are stopping by his planet to hold tryouts. Ratchet is initially disappointed, but his plans change when Clank, a defect robot who escaped Drek's factory, crash lands with an important message for the rangers. Together, Ratchet, Clank and the Rangers need to stop Drek, and his planet destroying battle station. The films plot is fairly basic, but fits well with the Ratchet and Clank series, being closely tied in to the video games plot. The animation in the film is fairly good, with Ratchet and Clank looking very much like the video games, and some excellently animated science fiction goodness, with great spaceships, shots of planets and so on. Some of the dialogue between the characters was funny enough to be enjoyable, and I personally felt the film to be watchable without feeling bored or put off.Even so, there is little else to like about the film, in my opinion. The characters were bland, which is a shame as even the video game does their characterization better. Ratchet was completely boring, Clank dull. The rangers all had single personality traits. The villain was evil for evil's sake. The plot, as mentioned, was a bit on the weak side, although this is not necessarily a terrible thing, as the film is based off of a video game where plot is secondary to gameplay. The issue here is that this does not work in a film, which is mostly supposed to be plot driven. Although some of the dialogue was fun, much of it was a solid miss. Jokes fall through constantly, which is a shame for a game series known for its light-hearted humour. While the animation was good in some aspects, much of it came off looking a bit underwhelming. Some settings were grand, and others poorly done or dull looking. All in all, this was a mixed bag for me. Nostalgia kept me watching, but the film seems to lack a lot of what could have made it excellent. It suffers from a poor story, one sided characters, mediocre animation, and hit or miss humour. Some of the animation work was well done, others not so much. This film seemed to suffer from a lack of a target audience. Is it shooting for Nostalgia, or child-friendly? Kids may get a kick out of it, but it lacks much of the charm of many animated films today. It looks and sounds like a the game, but lacks the finish to please hardcore fans of the video game series as well. Frankly, a film that was neither good nor bad, but an admirable attempt to make a big budget video game film. It didn't work too well this time, but there is a silver thread in this film. It does a passable job, and it can be tried out for those with younger kids who may be getting into the Ratchet and Clank game released alongside this film. A solid attempt that unfortunately fell through in many ways. 5/10
... View MoreBased on the hit video game series, Ratchet and Clank is about a Lombax wanting to do more with his life as he comes across a defect robot who warns others that the galaxy is in danger. Now the video game franchise is one of my favourites of all time, I own every game and have completed them multiple times so I was pretty excited about this film. looking at the trailer, I could tell this was going to be aimed for kids or fans of the series, anyone else outside of that niche will not enjoy this I however thought it was enjoyable for what it was. The voice acting was spot on, with some celebrities such as Paul Giamatti and Sylvester Stallone joining in with the original voice actors it blended in well! The animation was pleasant, obviously not going to compete with Pixar but the animation was never bad at any point. The script was hit or miss, too may one liners as it tries to be funny and unfortunately misses quite often probably great for kids but rather tiresome for anyone else. The story is far too quick paced for any character or emotional investment which is a shame because if this film did well it could've started a franchise. A great thing that this film has is easter eggs, there are so many of them for the fans that it really did put a smile on my face but for anyone else they would've been overlooked. This film did coincide with the reboot game that was released also this year, unfortunately the game is way better but this is not the worst video game adaptation which is the best thing I can say. Overall, Ratchet and Clank is a nice animated film for kids and fans but for anyone else it is a rather hollow film that just moves too fast.Reviewed by: http://www.themoviediorama.com
... View MoreJesus Christ, is this movie really this underrated? I saw it theaters in 3D a few days ago and I did not get bored, it was such a great movie. I'd call it 2nd best movie of this year (1st is Zootopia with great stuff). But I do not understand, why is it so god damn underrated? It has got likable characters, great story, decent voice acting, it's pretty much what a good movie needs. Lame that people underrate and hate on this movie, it's a great movie with a good message, that you should trust your friends and not enemies. I give this movie a total vote of: 10/10 Would recommend for families to watch this movie, they should like it. But remember, don't underrate the movie without watching it!
