It was refreshing to see Chris Evans portray this kind of role after quite some time. He is a screenplay writer who is forced to write a rom-com. He is a person who doesn't believe in love after a traumatic incident involving his mother. He believes his life is perfectly fine with his bunch of friends, his grandfather, and occasional flings. He has a deadline coming up, his agent is pressurizing him, and he has no clue what to do. He has a severe writer's block until he meets her at a charity event. Love at first sight for him. A friend and support for her. He confesses his love, but she is already engaged. Now, it is up to him to fight or let go. There are a few laughs here and there throughout the movie.Chris Evans keeps the energy and spunk alive. Michelle also plays her part well, as the girl torn between love and stability. On the flip-side, I found the story clichéd in some places. On an afterthought, quite a treat if you are a Chris Evans fan.

I don't mind the occasional romcom. As a matter of fact I rented this at the same time i rented "Love, Rosie". Neither were anything to write home about or recommend, but this one in particular was weak. The biggest problem here is the writing - which is deplorable. The plot around the lead character is dropped like a dead fly. There is just absolutely no momentum for the plot. The whole "writing" theme isn't tackled well at all(kinda mirrors the whole script actually), and Chris Evans doesn't really fit the bill either. Don't get me wrong, I like Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan very much, but this will easily qualify as one of their worst. They don't have any chemistry here. The biggest problem is Michelle's 'playing hard to get' which really derails the whole thing. It's not the acting... it's the writing.. there's no significantly well- written dialog between these two, and then the hard-to-get theme, the oddball friend thang, and the completely ball-dropped writing subject of the plot come together to give us this.... a completely under-whelming romcom.I would definitely pass on this one. "Love, Rosie" wasn't great, but it was a lot better following this. There's just not much at the Redbox - here's yesterdays Redbox ratings: Love, Rosie 5.5/10 Playing It Cool 4/10 Spare Parts 6.5/10 Wild Tales 8.5/1042/100 Pass! Even fans of the genre. Drab.

Review: I really wasn't that impressed with this film because it seemed to be going nowhere, right from the very beginning. Chris Evans plays a womanising writer who is struggling to come up with an idea for a Rom-Com. His agent promises him an action movie as his next project, if he produces the script but he is having problems with his personal love life because he can't get the woman that he really loves. The woman, played by Michelle Monaghan, already has a boyfriend so she becomes best friends with Chris Evans who can't get her out of his mind. His best friends try to help him through his emotional situation but his usual charms don't seem to work on Monaghan. I personally got fed up with the movie because Chris Evans just seems to be whining and moaning from one scene to the next. The director tried his best to keep the movie fresh by creating scenes from what is going on Evans crazy mind, but it's a basic Rom-Com which is corny and not that funny. The whole love story is quite boring, which is a shame because I liked the chemistry between the different characters. I was hoping for something a little different from this film but I struggled to stay interested and the constant whinging got on my nerves. Disappointing!Round-Up: I doubt that this small movie will damage Chris Evans career, after playing Captain America and the Human Torch in Fantastic Four, but it does show that he's not that great when it comes to Rom-Com's or anything without action in it. At 33, he must be laughing all the way to the bank because he also plays a big part in the Avengers franchise so this project must have pretty small compared to what he is used to. I'm just scared that he will get stuck when the big budget movies dry out. Personally, I like his cocky and self confident style of acting but he plays the same type of characters in all of his roles. He does show some emotion in the Captain America franchise and I really liked him in Injustice but he needs to come away from the comedies and action movies for a while to show that he has some more tools in the box.I recommend this movie to people who are into their Rom-Com's about a writer who meets a woman at a party and falls head over heals in love with her but she is promised to another so he tries his best to win her heart. 4/10

Playing It Cool has its cake and almost eats it too. The film knows that average no-brainer romantic comedies are dopey, but insists on delivering one anyways. When Chris Evans isn't playing Captain America, he still makes for a charismatic lead in downplayed productions. There are some funny quips within the circle of self-entitled screenwriters Evans' character surrounds himself with. The friendship they all have with each other feels authentic. The pack is made up by a sensitive Topher Grace, an aloof Luke Wilson, an amusing Martin Starr, and Aubrey Plaza using her knack for dry wit once again. The latter buddy is a nice addition since this proposes a Scott Pilgrim vs. the World reunion for Plaza and Evans. Playing It Cool has all the flare of a project brought to us by first-time filmmakers who are still brushing up on how to – funny enough – play it cool. Playing It Cool is worth a look.
