Overnight delivery is basically the same story as the movie "Road Trip" where the main character tries desperately to get back pictures of him with a stripper (Witherspoon), before his loving faithful girlfriend can see them. The same exact concept but without the laughing. So judge for yourself, I say terrible. Many of these sad sappy love stories start out with older actors again trying to be freshman in college. The so called "funny scenes" leave the viewer with a sense of "what the hell" almost on the verge of smacking your head on the table. So take my advice and if you feel the need to watch a story about going across country to stop a delivery with the hope of saving your relationship, stick to Road Trip. And hey who can beat the stoned grandfather with the boner.

Overnight Delivery (1998) ** (out of 4) Wyatt Tripps (Paul Rudd) isn't your typical college student. Instead of drinking beer, getting high and on the prowl for women, Wyatt is a gentleman who's madly in love with his girlfriend (Christine Taylor) who he's known since high school. The two made a commitment to hold off on sex until marriage but after a dreadful phone call Wyatt begins to think that she's cheating on him. Entering the picture is Ivy Miller (Reese Witherspoon), a former stripper with the heart of gold.Wyatt pours his soul out to Ivy but she isn't the type of girl who believes in love. She tells Wyatt that the only way for him to get back on his feet is to regain his ego. She suggests that he sends his girlfriend an overnight letter telling her that's he's the one cheating on her and wants to break up. Wyatt does this but the next morning he learns that the girlfriend really isn't cheating so he and Ivy hit the road trying to intercept the letter before the love of his life gets it. Along the way Wyatt and Ivy learn more about one another and I'll let you guess what happens.Overnight Delivery is just one of many romantic comedies where the first eight-minutes we have the main characters fighting, screaming, fighting and doing more screaming yet in the final five minutes we get the typical ending, which we've come to expect from this type of film. A movie like this depends on liking the main characters, which is half the problem with the film. The other problem is that we've seen this way too many times so there's so surprises along the way and in the end we're left with an unoriginal film that doesn't have much of anything going for it.Paul Rudd is best known for his role in Clueless but I've never really cared for him in anything. I'm not sure how much direction he was actually getting but the performance is very weak because this guy has no identity. One minute he's acting like a mature gentlemen yet the next minute he's acting like a buffoon. Rudd fails on both levels because he's good guy act comes off as hokey and all his jokes come off without any laughs. Reese Witherspoon is the best young actress working today and she does the most with what the screenplay offers. She's pretty much just along for the ride but she's at least easy on the eyes and brings that certain charm of hers to the film.Although Witherspoon is very good in the film she has no chemistry whatsoever with Rudd, which just makes the film even harder to get through. The so called best of these types of films usually at least have charming leads but that's no the case here and I'm going to guess that's why this film got a limited theatrical run before hitting video. The screenplay isn't fresh, isn't sharp and it really doesn't contain anything we haven't seen before. There are a few dirty sexual jokes but these come off very badly and you'll just be sitting there rolling your eyes. Overnight Delivery isn't the worst of its kind but outside of Reese there's really nothing to watch.

I've seen much more torcherous comedies out there that were done in the same sort of format. I admit, some of the scenes work and I did laugh. I just didn't laugh enough. And everything was overdone. Paul Rudd gave the most obnoxious performance of his career--We're used to seeing him in more laid-back roles like in "Clueless" and "The Object of My Affection." Paul can do comedy, if given the right material. This was the only comic role I've seen Paul in, but I can tell he has potential. And he is, undoubtedly, an underrated actor who hasn't yet became a household name. I'm sure this isn't one his proudest roles, and I'll be surprised if it remains on his resume. The material in the script sometimes gets so lame that Paul desperately tries to muster some laughs, but falls completely flat and just makes an ass out of himself. Larry Drake is fun, and seems to hold his own throughout. He was one of the redeeming elements of this often lame comedy. The comic moments are so forced that you wouldn't be surprised if this was made from a rejected sitcom script. "Overnight Delivery" is a hit-or-miss comedy, and is pretty passable. If you happen to come upon the movie on cable, it's worth a look. I can't say I was disappointed. It went direct to video, how good can it be? But it's an OK movie that's moderately harmless, easy-to-take and entertaining to a degree. But I wouldn't give it a reccomendation.

Most of us probably has been in love with someone that already have a girlfriend/boyfriend, right? This movie is about Wyatt Trips (Paul Rudd) who thinks his girlfriend, Kimberly, is cheating on him. He meets Ivy (Reese Witherspoon) at a strip-joint, and she gives him advice about what to do... They send Kim a package containing a very nasty letter, a condom that looks used, and a picture of Wyatt and Ivy naked. Then Wyatt finds out she wasn't cheating on him and he needs Ivy's help to stop the package that is sent by overnight delivery... The acting in this romantic comedy is really great, Reese Witherspoon in one of her best movies. You can see the chemistry between Reese and Paul, and you'll fall in love with the movie. It really touched me the first time I saw it, and it touched me even more the last time I saw it, because now I'm in love with someone that also got a girlfriend and I have a boyfriend too... If you are in that situation you certainly gonna recognize yourself in it, and you'll love it...
