Before I saw this film, I had no idea what Goema music was. I'd been living in Cape Town for about 3 years and became interested in the film because I had yet to see anyone try and understand the complex and varied influences that make up the Cape Town music scene on screen. I was curious about the subject but didn't expect much coz I'm not a fan of historical, academic studies.I was blown away with what I was presented with. Instead of a dry, factual presentation - what followed was a very pacey, exciting and engaging look at the history of a people and of a sound whose roots are still changing and evolving today. Even if you've had no experience with Cape Town or South Africa, if you've ever been moved by the punk revolution of the 70s or connected with the ingenuity and novelty of hip hop in the 80s, you will get this film. What works best is that even though the music is the focus, the story is told through the characters. And they have some pretty crazy guys in there. All of which means you never get bored throughout the +-60min.Refreshing, fun, informative and sometimes a little crazy. As far as music documentaries go, this is one with a lot of heart and will definitely encourage you to visit the city if you haven't already.
