I haven't watched anything so funny in a long long time. I really have no idea what's all the negative reviews that it got. This movie is so well written and directed and acted. I would definitely watch it again. I have no idea who is Rebecca Miller , i would really like to congratulate her for writing and directing such a beautiful comedy. It reminds me very much of Woody Allen but only better. Don't get me wrong i love most of Wooody Allen;s movies, but this one just nudge a little higher than Woody's.Should definitely be a contender for the Oscars. Totally overlooked. Please watch this if you are reading this. 10/10 from (i normally give out 1/10 scores).
... View MoreI used to really dislike Greta Gerwig's style of acting. It's very specific, but for some reason I never took to it. One day my opinion on her completely changed out of nowhere and now I very much enjoy the way she goes about her characters. In this film she is again charming and completely interesting. The film around her isn't great, but it's definitely very solid and it's also strengthened by the amount of talented actors that are helping carry it. Ethan Hawke is great, and Julianne Moore is also really good and really compelling. Overall, it's a decent watch. Not completely memorable but a worthy effort. I do end up recommending it, mostly for the performances.
... View MoreOkay, my first impression was...that guy looks familiar. Where have I seen him before? His movements look so familiar....wait, is that...Ragnar Lothbrok? And he's selling pickles? Okay, where will this movie go 'cuz now I'm watching it.And....it goes where so many pretentious New York movies go....into that realm where adults are BFFE's and living a life that can not possibly be lived if this movie was filmed in the suburbs of say, anywhere that isn't New York. I didn't find Julianne Moore's and Ethan Hawke's relationship all that convincing. Or maybe it was poor development of Hawke's character that was the problem. It is implied that he was once (maybe?) as ambitious as his wife, but not so much anymore? They just came off as a mismatch. And Maggie's character wasn't built strong enough to bat on that power duo's team. And what was with the kumbaya polygamist mothering with the two women? Suddenly, all is well in their world? Aggh, New York, I guess. At least that's what the writer wants us to believe. In this movie, people talk a lot, rather fast, and they all have a tendency to mumble. I found that distracting. It's not a terrible movie to sit through, but it might make you want to eat some good pickles.
... View MoreGreta Gerwig as "Maggie" (an independent woman) bakes up a plan to become a single mother and in the process 'the plan' works but then backfires and puts her into a situation 'the plan' did not include - marriage.Gerwig gives a charming performance as Maggie steering a course through a relationship with a overly analytical writer once divorced husband, raising her three year old child, working her job as an instructor in a local college, and realizing her husband is still in love with his first wife! Maggie is in a pickle so she devises another plan! The setting is the New York City intellectual society living in row houses and meeting in cafe's to socialize. The cast includes Bill Hader, Ethan Hawke, Maya Rudolph, Julianne Moore, Wallace Shawn. This is a simple 'slice of life' type story about modern people looking for and finding happiness and direction in their life. It's probably a film more appreciated by a viewer that likes a romantic flavor in a story that looks into the feelings and emotion in the human spirit. This is a cheerful light story that includes just a touch of sorrow mixed into a picture of mostly happy people getting on with life. And don't forget the pickles!
