Kuffs is a proof that Christian Slater has loads of charisma and it is shocking he never became a bigger star than he was back in the 90s. He plays a lovable yet dorky cop straight out of school. This is a fun little film starring future action heroine Milla Jovovich as his girlfriend who is pregnant. The flow of the film is quite good and it never overstays its welcome. Kuffs is a welcome addition to anyone seeking early 90s unknown or relegated films and should give anyone who watches a rush of nostalgia.
... View More"Kuffs" is another movie from the 90's that tries very hard to be as charming and fun. The movie obviously aims at the audience that was raised on the 80's. They even haired Harold Faltermeyer (famous for "Beverly hills cop" soundtrack) to give the 80's feel to "Kuffs". Faltermeyer's music here is unfortunately a shadow of his best work ("Axel F") , just like "Kuffs" is a shadow of a really good action comedy. There are some interesting things here. The idea of districts and private police is refreshing. The fact that movie obviously breaks the fourth wall is also something you don't see too often. Unfortunately , the movie quickly becomes a routine one –of-many-action-comedies. Christian Slater is really likable and pretty much carries the whole movie on his own. I feel sorry that the writers weren't able to give him some really dialogues and witty one liners. Why have Kuffs break the fourth wall if he doesn't have any interesting thing to say ? A waste of good idea. The other characters seems interesting at first , but the movie never gives them enough screen time and the screenplay doesn't give them a lot to do. The story itself is a lame story about evil businessman which was done before and with a better result. The action scenes are forgettable and the movie has only small moments of good humor ( Slater fighting for life in his apartment). For action or comedy junkies only. I give it 2/10.
... View MoreOK so overall the story was a bit transparent. Here's what it is about: George Kuffs (Slater) is a restless young man who is always looking for the get rich quick scheme. When his drop dead gorgeous girlfriend (Milla Jovovich) starts to get serious, George decides its time to move on. George approaches his older brother Brad (Boxleitner) for a loan, he receives a job offer instead, Join Brads Patrol Specialist team (basically the cops) George doesn't want to do it, but when his brother gets Gunned down in the line of duty by the greatest T-Shirt wearing badguy on the planet (Leon Rippy). He inherits the Patrol Specialist business. George finds himself in the police academy, by day and trying to find clues to his brother's murder by night. George is assigned a partner (Tony Goldwyn) who to say the least doesn't approve of George's tactics or disregard for the rules that come with the badge. The director/writer Bruce A. Evans and writer Raynold Gideon wrote this part for Christian Slater, it has his heathers wit and charm with the unmistakable delivery of Slater. The one-liners are littered thru the story. Ex.- At one point while fighting a badguy Kuffs throws a lamp at the intruder; the lamp is plugged into the socket and falls harmlessly at the intruder's feet. This movie was set with the backdrop of San Francisco which is beautiful in its own right, but when one of the greatest directors of photography Thomas Del Ruth is involved it makes it that much more interesting. Look for amazing shots for instance two of my favorites, a paint store owner is killed and he lands in a giant pool of yellow paint the blood makes a smaller pool in the middle of the yellow. The other is when Kuffs is brought into the station in the back of a black and white police cruiser they drive by this gigantic red wall. A lot of people may not appreciate this but those that have read this far into this, may. TALK HARD.
... View MoreKuffs is a truly awful film that contains one of my all-time favorite show-stopping plot points. Slater's character walks out of a church where his brother is praying. Hears gunshots. Runs back into church to see thug standing over his dead brother, smoking gun in hand. At the police station, Slater is informed that the police can't press charges because-quote-"You didn't actually see the thug shoot your brother. Therefore, he can just claim he saw a gun and picked it up."-unquote. Of course, the police let the thug go...I know Kuffs is supposed to be mindless, but this scene caused my jaw to hit the floor. Evidently, the San Francisco police have never heard of fingerprints, ballistics and testing for powder burns. Much less, questioning a suspect, as to why he was standing in a church with a smoking gun in hand and body on the ground (with bullets in it that no doubt match those fired from the gun).I never knew that modern-day police had to rely solely on eye-witnesses to secure convictions.awful awful awful - avoid like the plague
