Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na' has bits of many films, most notably 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' in the main idea of two friends who are in love with each other without being aware of their own feelings. But despite that, there was something extremely awakening and refreshing in this film. Today's generation's youth was brilliantly portrayed, and the film's biggest strength was its striking simplicity and everyday reality. The simple characters, the simple dialogue, along with the natural acting, the brilliant soundtrack by A.R Rahman, and the depiction of modern-day India made for a very fine and enjoyable movie. The film does not only work because of its romantic nature, but also its striking portrayal of relationships, whether it's the one between Jai and Aditi, between Aditi and her brother, and particularly between Jai and his mother. Tyrewala skillfully captures the camaraderie of the group of friends, who are always there for each other. A.R.R brilliantly composes a soundtrack that effectively suits the film's youthful and rather melancholic mood. The songs are totally in sync with the situations and among the many good numbers, my favourite would be the title track, "Kabhi Kabhi Aditi". The background score is also quite good, with some nice tunes enhancing the narrative and the partly joyful, partly melancholic atmosphere of the film.Imran Khan makes a very good debut. The guy is simple and acts quite naturally. Genelia just has the right amount of spunk and vivacity to suit the part, and although in some portions she is a bit unnatural, she grows on you as the film goes by. It might well be because the film itself catches your interest so much that at some point nothing else matters. Ratna Pathak is excellent as the caring and loving mother. Prateik Babbar does very well, and Manjari Fadnis does her part exceedingly well. Naseeruddin Shah does a fantastic cameo, as always never fearing the possibility of ridiculing himself. Paresh Rawal is as witty and funny as always.Abbas Tyrewala's direction is fantastic and there is an impressive sensibility in the way he chooses to carry the narrative forward. The film is fast paced. Jaane Tu is not devoid of clichés. Towards the end it's far more evident because it gets dramatised, but then, Tyrewala gives it a nice touch of humour, effectively summing up this feature. JTYJN is a refreshing youthful film and it's really fun to watch. The story is nothing new, but it's injected with energy, realism and humour to create an entertaining picture that is worth revisiting.

This movie is not Art or anything neither is it funny enough to hurt your stomach. But this is a very cute movie and it sure delivers entertainmentHindi movies generally tend to be dumb. Weak plots, black and white characters and entire movie depending on unbelievable coincidences happening again and again and again (I advise non Indians to stay away from Akshay kumars' comedies specially)But this This is quite different. It has many many subplots, colorful characters. And most important a genuine script that screams of originality. You can't guess what happens next scene. (broadly speaking yes you know but exact execution tends to be unpredictable, not many cliché's etc) Things fall into place like clockwork in the end and i couldn't hope for something funnier and in line with the story.I would say this has the feeling of big fish, my sassy girl(Korean one) The family stone mostly and in a tiny way reminds me of the Spanish apartmentThere is something about the main group of youngsters that radiates freshness and free spiritedness, I cannot put a finger on it but it feels like you know this group, you've seen people like this what they feel and how they are going to end up. And the mother, well she rocks big time:)I loved every moment she was on screen :)And come to think of it the movie never became ugly for a sec a bit clichéd around the end but never boring or even close to unbearable If you like this i think you may like one of these Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula or(exclusive or :P) Taxi No. 9211 or Dil chahta haiAnd sadly to the non Indian viewer There are'nt many movies like this in bollywood only the recent ones a re similar something with aamir khan and not very mainstream would be a good choice.

A gentle, unpretentious and well-written romantic comedy which presents a fresh and different perspective on a very old question: can a girl and a boy be the best of friends without the relationship ever tipping over into romance territory? Jaane Tu does'nt seem to think so and to be honest the movie does not even play fair by making at least one title character's choice for a better half a totally unlikable cad to clear the stage for the hero and heroine to get together again.Abbas Tyrewala knows the milieu in which the story transpires very well and it shows in his screenplay and dialogues. There are some very funny scenes such as the scene where the heroine's parents meet the hero with a marriage proposal(he thinks its a job interview). Some nice quirky touches such as the three rites of passage that every Rathore must fulfill in order to qualify as a man or the hero's current squeeze who manages to turn the ordinary and the mundane into something magical add spice to the proceedings. The quirky touches are sometimes underlined by a dose of hard reality such as the unhappy home where the girl comes from as a result of which she retreats into a world of fantasy and imagination. Some of the quirky touches and subplots (such as the strained relationship between Genelia and her brother further symbolized in her liking for cats and his liking for rats!) are simply there as adornments and bear no functional relationship to the story whatsoever. Fortunately they don't look out of place and actually help the viewing experience go down well.Acting across the board is very good and both Imran Khan and Genelia D'Souza are just about adequate. No one outshines the other. Paresh Rawal is underused as a police inspector because his comic potential (so evident in Hera Pheri and even Awara Pagal Dewana) is not at all exploited by the director. Naaseruddin Shah gets to have a bit of fun as a ghost-on-the-wall(inspired by Hum Paanch) and his interactions with Rathna Pathak Shah (his wife in real life) are bound to produce giggles if not outright guffaws from the audience. Arbaaz and Sohail Khan deserve special mention for their comedic act as the hero's long-lost uncles. Jayant Kripalani and Anuradha Patel as Aditi's parents make no special impact whatsoever.Overall, the movie does not do anything daring or different with the question it deals with but at least it respects its audiences intelligence and does not force-feed ridiculous situations and characters down its throats. In the barren cinematic wasteland that has been the summer of 2008, something this well-written and directed that is a cut above the ordinary is always welcome.

i might be held accused for digging too much into a movie whose sole purpose is to make the viewer 'feel good', but shouldn't feel good movies have some logic? the movie is about two lovers, jai & aditi and their 4 friends. lets start with these friends of theirs.DO THEY HAVE LIVES OF THEIR OWN? throughout the movie, it seems like their lives start, stop & revolve around jai & aditi, & the funniest part is both jai & aditi don't give a s**t about them. initially, jai & aditi are too involved with each other to care about them, then jai-aditi-(what's this?-girl) are too involved in their crap to notice about them. now, this friend group has 2 boys, one of them is not bad-looking,but he is given such bad hair styling and such bad clothes compared to jai that he looks like a clown throughout the movie.the other guy is balding, and given even worse clothes.out of 2 girls, one is shown to have below average IQ, the other is shown as such a witty girl, one begins to wonder what is she doing with them? as a whole, the director made them look like a bunch of biggest losers on the planet,so that we can focus solely on jai & aditi.the balding guy & the stupid girl have feelings for aditi & jai.they fall for each other, because they envy jai-aditi's love for each other.and at this point, the viewers are told that jai & aditi don't think they love each other(even though the whole universe knows that they do).they suddenly become too dumb to understand this most obvious thing.after this, starts the silliest of melodrama.i could not connect with any of the characters because i really don't think such characters exist in real life.but what i think doesn't matter because movie is a hit & amir, the producer has made a point.at one point in the movie, amir makes jai's mother say that Indian filmmakers(excluding amir,of course) make silly movies & Indian cinema needs intelligent movies.so when jai goes out to watch a movie, he watches a 'james bond' movie instead of an Indian movie. i totally agree with you amir, except that i don't think you have made any intelligent movie either.
