All right, so I watched it, but only to see how it compared to the original.I didn't really want to see the harrowing first half, but knew I had to get through it to see the "vengeance is mine" driven 2nd part. To keep things short: yes, indeed, the character is brutalized, the actress gives it her all (think Ned Beatty in "Deliverance") and the camera spares us nothing. Now, onto the "good part", Katie's revenge. It's kind of a let down, to tell the truth. Not that the scenes aren't expertly filmed, acted and written. But in spite of the gruesome ferocity of the revenge killings, none of the have quite the squeal factor of the bathtub scene from the original (which really should have been the FINAL revenge in the original, instead of the second). And the character's vengeance themes are perhaps too literal to be even the least bit clever (for instance, after bad guy #3 tells Katie early on, "we all have our vices", he wakes up with his scrotum in a vice. Not funny, guys...not the least bit subtle.) On the other hand, the underground passage Katie makes on her initial journey to freedom takes on almost mythical qualities. And she sometimes looks like a demon-ness from Hell itself as she does various horrible things to her tormentors.I don't think there was ever any question that the cinematography on this film was going to be impressive. But the writing just misses the mark.
... View MoreWhat. On. Earth...did I just watch? Absolutely disgusting, consistently eye-watering and incredibly distasteful. Honestly, I'm not sure how anyone can find these "torture-porn" films entertaining. They're horrible and this is no different. A young girl aspiring to be a model embarks on a photo shoot which takes a turn for a worst when the photographers rape and murder her. That is until she miraculously survives and decides to take matters into her own hands. "Vengeance is mine" is a prominent line in this, and boy does she take revenge! Several occasions where I physically couldn't watch it, my mind wouldn't allow me. The pure definition of sick. The plot does detail the apparent issue of human trafficking that many thrillers are tackling, illustrating how diabolical it is. A committed and investing central performance from Jemma Dallender who really carried the film. I did have a moment where I exclaimed "...isn't that the guy from Doc Martin!?" for Joe Absolom. Unfortunately though, it's just another formulaic predictable plot that attempts to gross you out with every torture scene it unveils. It's quite literally the exact same structure as its predecessor, which consequently removes all thrills that could be had. The lack of characterisation prevents me from being emotionally invested into the story. Constant cuts to a black screen which act as scene transitions were jarring and monotonously dull. The torture scenes themselves seemed too basic and certainly not as elaborate as the first instalment, however in saying that these were definitely more grotesque. Excrement, vomit, pee and even some weird mouldy rotten substance...I'm sorry, but this just was not to my taste. Don't even get me started on the last trap that our protagonist makes, I advise male viewers look away immediately. It's not entertaining, it's not even dramatic...it's just wrong. Uninspired wrongness. Please send me all your support for when I watch the third film...
... View MoreBeing attacked, raped and then knocked unconscious and then waking up in a foreign country several days later, how truly terrifying! I can't say I like the Katy character she seemed like a bit of a stuck up girl possibly a New York stereotype and the bad guys were a bit of an Eastern European pervert stereotype. And I can't see a beautiful young woman walking into a makeshift studio full of guys she didn't know all alone. I don't see her friends approving of it either but maybe we are supposed to get the impression she is a bit naive and so are all her friends, even the neighbor who tries to rescue her and gets stabbed to death. It is definitely the torture porn category of horror with rape scenes and electro-torture.
... View MoreThe PlotKatie is trying to make it in the cutthroat world of modeling. When she innocently accepts an offer to have new photos taken for her portfolio, the experience quickly turns into an unthinkable nightmare of rape, torture, and kidnapping. When a twist of fate finally frees her from her captors - beaten, battered, bruised, and broken, she will have to tap into the darkest places of the human psyche to not only survive her ordeal, but to ultimately find the strength to exact her brutal revenge. If you liked the original from the 70s (not the redux that stunk) you will LOVE this movie. It's gritty, powerful, and redeeming. How it got only an R rating is beyond me. Make sure you see the unedited version which is 6 minutes longer.Jemma does a whole lot of screaming, but she has one knockout body and looks so great naked. Hot face too. Wow.Admittedly, the movie has the same basic plot of the first movie, but in some ways this is even better. Certainly as good. The production values are definitely much better.
