Many years have passed since the sentient 1963 VW Bug named 'Herbie' took the racing world by storm; now he has been consigned to a junk yard awaiting the crusher. Meanwhile Maggie Peyton has just graduated from college so her father rewards her with her choice of car… from the junk yard. Inevitably she chooses Herbie, or more accurately Herbie chooses her. It quickly becomes apparent to her that Herbie is no ordinary car as he drives her to her friend Kevin's garage where he works as a mechanic. He later takes them to a race event where she ends up beating stock car racer Trip Murphey in a street race. He is determined to get his own back and gets her to race against him again; this time the winner gets ownership of the loser's car… Maggie obviously wants Trip's stock car but Herbie doesn't want to be passed over for another car and throws the race. Maggie will have to save him from destruction once more before facing Trip again. There are other problems too Maggie is part of a racing family but promised her father that she wouldn't race again after an accident when she was younger and having been caught lying to him must regain his trust.I'd seen the original Herbie films as a child and recall enjoying them but wasn't expecting too much of this; perhaps it was because I wasn't expecting too much I found myself rather enjoying it. Yes it is obviously rather silly but it is also a lot of fun. Lindsay Lohan is charming as Maggie; she easily carries the film with her fine performance. She is ably supported by Matt Dillon who, unsurprisingly, makes a suitably unpleasant villain in the role of Trip; nicely over the top in a way that remains suitable for a film aimed primarily at children. Michael Keaton and Justin Long also impress as Maggie's father and Kevin respectively. There is another major character of course… Herbie; he is portrayed in an enjoyable way; at first appearing to be somewhat possessed, there is even mention of getting an exorcist, then developing a relationship with Maggie; all without saying a word. The action scenes are for the most part fairly exciting; there are some pretty silly moments but they are clearly aimed at younger viewers and I'm sure they will be delighted by them. Overall I'd recommend this, mainly to those with youngish children but also to the young at heart.

This 2005 Herbie sequel is one of the most entertaining in the ongoing Herbie series. Lindsay Lohan stars as the young racer who picks a ready-to-be-compacted Herbie out of the junkyard. Brecklin Meyer plays her mechanic sidekick and Michael Keaton is her father, who never wants her to race. Matt Dillon is simply great as the villainous pro-racer Trip Murphy. The scene where Herbie exuberantly tries to get Lohan's attention when she's deciding which car to buy out of the junkyard is hilarious! Also the first race with the arrogant Trip Murphy on the streets is thrilling. The Herbie series is as follows: The Love Bug (1968); Herbie Rides Again (1974); Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977); Herbie Goes Bananas (1980; Herbie, the Love Bug (TV Series) (1982); The Love Bug (1997); and Herbie Fully Loaded (2005) You'll note this list includes the 1997 TV film "The Love Bug," featuring Bruce Campbell. Don't miss out on this flick because it introduces the DARK Herbie, "Horace" (lol!).As you can plainly see, the long-running Herbie series is perhaps second only to the renown James Bond series. It just so happens that the very same day that I saw "Herbie Fully Loaded" I also viewed "Christine" (1983), which is a great film by the way. Anyway, I couldn't help but wonder which car would win if Herbie and Christine duked it out. I'd have to go with Herbie. How about you? If you think Herbie would win pick "Helpful" below.GRADE: B+

When Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan) graduates from college, her father Ray Peyton Sr. (Michael Keaton) gives an used car from a scrap metal yard as a gift, and she takes a 1963 Volkswagen beetle with the number 53. Maggie finds a letter in the glove compartment telling that the bug's name is Herbie and she visits her friend and mechanic Kevin (Justin Long) to check Herbie. They go to a car show where they are challenged by the arrogant champion racer Trip Murphy (Matt Dillon) for a race. Maggie and Herbie win Trip, and the revengeful pilot plots a scheme to take Herbie from Maggie."Herbie Fully Loaded" is delightfully cute and a magnificent family entertainment. The story is predictable, corny, but mainly adorable. The sweet Lindsay Lohan is perfect for this type of role, and Matt Dillon performs a great villain. Take the popcorn, join family and friends and have a good-time watching "Herbie Fully Loaded" on DVD. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "Herbie, Meu Fusca Turbinado" ("Herbie, My Turbined Beetle")
