I was recently disappointed when I rewatched the original "Heavy Metal" film and I'd never actually seen this direct-to-video sequel before, but I again found myself disappointed. First, I was disappointed that this was not an anthology film like the original, and instead is one full-length story, which isn't really a bad thing, but wasn't what I was expecting. My second disappointment was with the film's rampant misogyny. This was the main detraction from my recent rewatching of the 1981 original film. I was thinking that a follow-up film made 20 years later might instead focus on science fiction and less on buxom ladies in various states of dress, but that is not the case. The film is based on the comic "The Melting Pot" by Kevin Eastman of TMNT fame, Simon Bisley of 2000AD fame, and Eric Talbot. The story involves a Julie Strain voiced character avenging the destruction of her home world and also rescue her sister from a smarmy villain voiced by Michael Ironside. And this is all the fault of the Loc-Nar, the evil storytelling orb from the first film, when a shard of it is discovered. Billy Idol is the only other well known actor in the film. And heavy metal music is, of course, prominently features on the soundtrack. An extra half star for Monster Magnet, Queens of the Stoneage, Bauhaus (not heavy metal), but the rest of bands I didn't really care for.

Look, the original Heavy Metal isn't exactly a masterpiece. But it knew what it was, and kept things interesting through animation, music, variety, and lack of restraint. It was a homage to the most stereotypical tropes of the genre, even satire. Heavy Metal 2000 is legitimately a stereotypical "metal" film.Heavy Metal 2000 is essentially the final short of Heavy Metal extended. It shows why Heavy Metal was split into shorts to begin with. The story is predictable and the characters are flat. There is a lot more violence and sex in this film than the typical sci-fi story, but you have no investment to those involved, and its not over-the-top enough to be awesome or funny. To put it bluntly - Heavy Metal 2000 is a boring film, with no identity.Heavy Metal 2000 also suffers in artistic production. The backgrounds are sometimes nice...but there is sooooo much brown and gray! Its a gritty, ugly film. The characters...how do I put this...seem too soft? There is too little detail to them, especially noticeable in close-ups. And we can't forget about the bad CGI. The smoke and fire effects look like they were added in 5 minutes.I'm more of a power metal guy, so I can't say how good the music is. But I've seen no defenders of this film's soundtrack.Heavy Metal 2000 is awful. Only fans of the sleazy should give it a chance. It fails on every mark. Dull, stupid, and unaware, don't be fooled by the Heavy Metal name.

Quite honestly, they should have just kept the budget for the magazine and stayed out of the movie business. In short, you only get one story with this one. The story line is badly developed and loaded with animation that would make Hanna Barbera beam with a new found sense of superiority. But, it has boobs, which is usually enough to draw the attention of any basement dwelling nerd type away from his D&D campaign.I will admit to getting some of my prepubescent kicks with this magazine, but when that novelty worn down I discovered that there was indeed a large cache of very well down comic artists. Some very unique material indeed. And sadly, with the first Heavy Metal movie, while they presented various stories and artists, it was apparent they were still under budget constraints. But I do contend that this recent movie was pretty much an insult to the Heavy Metal magazine name and the people whom have enjoyed it over the years.

Heavy Metal 2000...what a waste of life. The acting was abysmal, the writing was atrocious, the plot was simplistic, the animation was atrocious and a waste of production, the whole movie lacked in every respect. I had great hopes for Heavy Metal 2000, when I saw the original Heavy Metal a year or so ago, but when I finally set eyes upon the film, I I was disgusted...they could have done so much more (or less in some areas). I also felt that Heavy Metal 2000 was filthy in all the wrong places and for all the wrong reasons. I respect them for making this film Rated R, but for fu*ks sake, do it the right way, don't just throw some filth in a scene that doesn't need it. I'd give this film a 1/10, making the worst piece of more adult animation I have ever seen. A disgrace to the original "Heavy Metal". Excuse me while I go burn this atrocity. I got it for free and I feel cheated.
