Insufficient budget to create somewhat believable FX then you should not be making a movie. The character Lou, did not even bother taking note of the actor, because the only roles the guy was ever cast in were minor parts. Am I the only 1 who found it completely unbelievable that anyone in such poor physical shape as Lou being approved as an astronaut? Welcome sight to see Darren McGavin, made famous in his role of Karl Kolchak is always a pleasure to watch perform, from the NIght Stalker to the father in Christmas Story the man had talent. NetFlix is a waste of money, everything they have came out (rent or buy) 18- 24 mos. ago, other night I had a NetFlix CSR trying to convince me that many of the movies they have to stream do so before they are released for renting or buying. As to NetFlix CSR's claim, true to an extent, yes many are streamed before being released for renting or buying, but only movies that are knockoffs/ poor imitations of hyped movies, or cheaply made movies, the kind of garbage that is produced for the SyFy Channel.
... View MoreKind of a high rating for a film that was kind of dull to me. The story is about an alien spaceship cover up featuring two guys out to clear their names even though no one really shows any anger towards them for the death and they end up endangering the lives of many and even offing a few people along the way. The best image in the whole movie comes near the beginning of the film when a satellite collides with an unidentified flying object and sends a man into space with his head traveling solo. There is one more interesting scene, that of a bunch of scientist going into a ship and looking around as it was fairly well done. The rest of the movie is just dull, the cover up gets to absurd, the aliens to human and the revelation at the end is not really anything to get to worked up over. It is a bit like Close Encounters if Steven Spielberg did not have a budget and had to make do with a very talkative script and tried to squeeze out an action scene or two that really was not justified in the film. It is kind of fun seeing some of the characters and going he is from this movie and he is from that though.
... View MoreHilarious early 80s cheese fest, worthy of the MST3K treatment that this masterpiece garnered. I watched this in the early days of cable so it has a certain nostalgia; it truly is amazing how these brilliant and tiny number of scientists can swiftly interpret the data at hand to come up with staggering conclusions to reshape mankind as we know it. Truly stupendous. A must for conspiracy theorists and fans of ultra cheesy sci fi. As movie critic Leonard Maltin stated: "Clickly made, but about as credible as the three stooges in outer space." I loved that line. As for the movie, it has a spot on my list of guilty pleasures.
... View MoreYes, this film really was made!Get out your house-sized grain of salt! Basically, a satellite emplacement goes awry because the satellite collides with an alien spaceship running on autopilot and bound for an automated landing on earth. A pair of shuttle pilots witness the event and, predictably, a government cover-up ensues which attempts to cast blame on the astronauts themselves. The alien ship lands and is dragged off for investigation in the infamous Hanger 18. NASA, the military and the US government then all have to figure out what to do about it.While the plot is admittedly silly, the dialog sometimes ridiculous, and the characters sort of one-dimensional, the screenwriters did a decent job of pacing and developing and telling the story. There are only a few entirely absurd parts. For example - while on the run, Gary Collins seems, under any circumstances, to be able to find a car with keys in the ignition and an owner who doesn't really care if he steals it. And almost every single scene in the film has two people in it.While not exactly gripping or engaging, this is an entertaining little film to be viewed after midnight on any sleepless weeknight. Hanger 18 is slightly more credible than most X-Files episodes and slightly less well-scripted and shot. Performances are mostly fairly good, but Darren McGavin painfully over-acts most of his scenes and the number of hypertensive yelling and fist pounding scenes by the entire cast really detracts from the overall experience in a big way. Perhaps the director had a troubled childhood or just kept a too-large pot of coffee available on the set at all times. We'll probably never know. But I know that I can rate this one "somewhat more entertaining than most X-Files episodes" which, unfortunately, is more of a comment on the X-Files than this movie.
