A narrator (Brian Cox) reads a journal from the 19th century about the outbreak of the dead returning to life. It's 1865 Tennessee. Edward Young (Mark Gibson) is a Confederate soldier who encounters undead Union soldiers. Six years later, his home is attacked, his wife killed, and his son Adam goes missing. He finds him turned and has to destroy the body. He is in despair after losing everything. He finds Isaac in a desolate farmhouse. This small Canadian horror indie is too slow and too long. There isn't enough to justify the extended length. I can deal with the indie factor but it needs to be tighter. The lengthening of every scene strips away much of the needed intensity. I would also definitely eliminate reading the journal aspect. This concept of a zombie apocalypse in Civil War era is intriguing and could be compelling for an indie. The execution here is unable to make this good enough to seek out.
... View More"Exit Humanity" (2011) might not have been as great as I'd hoped. (The trailer made it look amazing.) But it was still a good and creative independent zombie film; I'd give it an 8 out of 10.It's a genre-buster that posits a zombie epidemic just after the Civil War, but that isn't a gimmick. There's a complete absence of camp that makes this a "straight horror movie" and a hell of a lot more fun. It's got a great script, beautiful locations, two great leads, and a couple of great "that guy" actors in supporting roles — the incredibly underrated Bill Mosely (Otis Driftwood in "House of 1000 Corpses") and the also-underrated Stephen McHattie. The directing is very spotty, the pacing is way off, and the "book chapter" structure makes this feel less like a movie and more like a series of well-made webisodes. (I'm starting to understand why many movies adhere to that "three-act" structure that critics refer to.) The limited budget also shows — there's a dearth off special effects and some of the zombies look remarkably like actors in white facepaint. (Is this a kabuki zombie epidemic?)One of the things that surprised me about this movie is how terrific Brian Cox' voice is. He narrates the entire tale retrospectively as an older version of the main protagonist. I can't believe I never noticed this before. I think he's better than Morgan Freeman or David Prowse. Check him out in the trailer. All in all, this was a good movie. I'd recommend it to any zombie horror fan.http://ericrobertnolan.wordpress.com/
... View MoreThe zombie genre has really suffered the last several years. There are so many movies about zombies, and none of them remotely good. This one I tried, it looked interesting so I gave it a shot. The beginning was pretty good, opening with a battle where the first zombie is seen. But the problems begin after that. There are too many scenes of dialogue that drag on forever. These tend to get boring. There are a few actual on screen killings but most cut away or show in animation form. The acting was good, and the effects were alright when shown. They had a good idea but it was executed poorly. The actual story would have been better without the zombies, but I guess they were thrown in, which is what it feels like when you watch it. All in all it is much better than a lot of the zombie movies but it is boring.
... View MoreI knew I was in for a treat when within the first 5 minutes of this film I was engrossed in it. "Exit Humanity" is a very well written film within the zombie genre. Generally, I love zombie films. Some are hit and miss, others like this one, grab my attention right away. The story, the practical effects, costuming, and even the settings were top notch. Setting the film just after the U.S. Civil War was a stroke of genius. So what if it makes it a period film... it was a very well executed period film. At the risk of repeating myself, I think the execution of the storyline deserves mentioning again, of course, without giving any spoilers. The story itself is rather well written, with plenty of points to hit on one's emotions. While it is a zombie film, there are some moments that do tug at the heart strings a little and we catch more than a hint of the darker side of man. Conclusion: 9/10 from me. The effects could've been just a tad better, the story did move a little slow though, and I would've liked to seen something more with the film's ending. Overall, I am so glad that I added this film to my collection.
