Timberlake plays a young reporter who stumbles upon the endemic corruption of the titular city, as exemplified in the force called F.R.A.T.(I don't know, Delta Xi? Ironically, the members are all immature men), and he forms a shaky alliance with the jaded reporter(Freeman) he used to work for, and a great IA detective(Spacey). This badly needs to increase the volume of everything but the loud soundtrack, as I would not have been able to tell what was being said if I didn't use the subtitles. The acting is fine - this really doesn't deserve its all-star cast, though. Or even Roselyn Sanchez. Well, OK, maybe her. The plot is unengaging, and after a while, it resorts to just have bodies piling up to keep going. At first this limits the avenues through which evidence can be gathered by our leads, but eventually, they seem to decide that killing *will* solve all problems. Why is this an action flick? The story doesn't call for that, at all. If the scenes were at least filmed to elicit a righteous anger, but no, most of them are of these crooked policemen, and it's glorifying them. The climax is a car-chase, culminating in a shoot-out... involving a friggin' flamethrower! Come on. When did this stop being about revealing the truth? Anyone? And while it can be tense, the hard-boiled cop clichés are quite distracting, and as it goes on, they just keep increasing in number. This is 91 min sans credits, and even so, it can't maintain your interest. There is a lot of bloody, brutal violence, disturbing content and strong language in this. The DVD comes with a 12 and a half minute Making of 'Edison'(it has it's own page here on the site, I'll review it separately) and trailers for Supercross, Beyond the Sea, Lord of War, this, Wolf Creek, Lucky Number Slevin and The Matador. I recommend this only to big fans of investigation fiction. 5/10
... View MoreJustin's a better singer than 'actor' (I hope) but with Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey et al in a good ensemble cast one hoped this 'corruption / redemption' story would work. Not so. Barely up to a 'made for TV' effort in spite of all that high priced talent in the cast. Wanna see something in the 'genre' which BLOWS THIS out of the water? THE WIRE, made in the same year, Baltimore, gritty dirty real unlike Vancouver BC Canada where this turkey was shot. Pretty locations do not a quality film make.Like the 'genre'? Serpico, LA Confidential, and the best of the best IMHO, CHINATOWN. Edison never makes it, but the young ones: Justin, LLCool, when he takes his shirt off...the fluttering of hearts in the small viewing audience notwithstanding, fails to raise the film to 'ART' status.Disappointing really. The ensemble cast has so much talent. David J. Burke, where is your best work?
... View More"Edison Force" is the biggest direct-to-video release of the year. It definitely had some competition which includes "End Game" (With Cuba Gooding Jr. and James Woods), "The Big White" (With Robin Williams and Holly Hunter) and "Grilled". (With Ray Romano, Burt Reynolds, and Juilette Lewis) "Edison Force" is about Joshua (Timberlake) who is a journalist. He uncovers corruption in the police force. One of the most evil cops is Lazerov (McDermott). He tells his boss Moses (Freeman) and they team up with Wallace (Spacey) and Reigert, the D.A. (Cary Elwes) to blow the whistle. But Lazerov doesn't want the secret to come out and he tries to kill Joshua. What saves this movie is the acting. Timberlake is OK. Some of his line readings are terrible though. Freeman and Spacey put in their usual professional performances. Dylan McDermott is the standout. You wish he had more screen time. John Heard drops by and gives a boring role as the chief of police some energy. The action scenes are fun and exciting also. I almost forgot that LL Cool J was in it. He's so wooden and aloof, you forget he's in the movie. If you don't take it seriously, you'll have a good time with it.For more insanity, please visit: comeuppancereviews.com
... View MoreWell... the movie actually does start off nicely, almost promising us a Training Day calibre movie. LL Cool J may not be a classy actor, but he outdoes all other rapper competition with two hands tied behind his back. Add to that Dylan McDermott, Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman and John Heard giving in solid performances and we almost hit a home run. Even Justin Timberlake, albeit slightly uneven and partially unconvincing, doesn't take away from enjoying the movie.I really liked most of the dialogues, which were nicely written and added a strong punch to interaction between characters. But if so much is right how the hell did the director steer so far off course and got completely lost? The first half of the movie actually sets up a great bad cop movie, but then suddenly we are thrown into the tragic territory of BAD script. And when I mean BAD I really must stress the capital letters. I won't get into too much detail, but the actions of the heroes and the baddies suddenly become so absurd and illogical from a moron's perspective, that you can only gasp in awe at the stupidity of the ending. The final shootout is just so out there in terms of common sense that it almost seems like someone forced it onto the poor director / scriptwriter David J. Burke. How can someone write such enticing dialogue and come up with such idiotic plot solutions? Dual personality disorder? Not even Spacey and Freeman can save this movie from being a qualified train-wreck.
