Drinking Buddies Trailers

Weekend trips, office parties, late night conversations, drinking on the job, marriage pressure, biological clocks, holding eye contact a second too long… you know what makes the line between “friends” and “more than friends” really blurry? Beer.

I really wanted to like this movie. I love the cast members and had high hopes but was sorely disappointed.

Luke (Jake Johnson) and Kate (Olivia Wilde) work at a micro-brew and spend their nights drinking at a bar. They are close friends. Luke has a girlfriend Jill (Anna Kendrick) who is a teacher and level headed. Kate has been dating Chris (Ron Livingston) for 8 months. He is also level headed. Our foursome go away for a weekend where Chris has the realization Kate is not right for him. He is more interested in Jill. Chris breaks up with Kate which leads to...pretty much nothing except the realization there is life outside of drinking. This is a pretty much been there done that film for me and I was bored from the lack of comedy, action, or drama beyond a sarcastic remark. Not much in entertainment value.F-bomb. Implied sex. Olivia Wilde brief nudity?

**********Spoiler Alert**********I wasn't expecting to enjoy this movie. I was just bored and wanted to watch a silly film that did not require much energy or investment to be put into it but i was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. It's a light story about friendship and love with its main setting being a brewery where 2 of the characters work. It focuses mostly on the different relationship dynamics between the characters without going into too much detail. There is no actual character development or big twist in the story that turns the character upside down. I appreciated this much more than the many movies that try to cram a change of character in 1 and a half hours that just feels forced. We are just given a sneak peak into the charming friendship of Luke and Kate (with a hint of something more) and the lovable relationship of Luke and Jill. Luke and Kate are linked by their love of beer that creates an interesting relationship between the two which is befitting of the title 'Drinking Buddies'. Their cool and chilled attitude towards life; drinking, laughing and generally trying to enjoy themselves makes for a fun-to-watch couple. The way I see it, Chris did not exactly fit with these other 3 characters; appearing slightly uptight or boring, if not dull. Paradoxically, we see 2 instances where Chris is seen not liking beer and seeming distant from Kate which hints towards their inevitable break-up. Although he had that brief moment with Jill, it wasn't enough to make her leave Luke and I honestly did not feel like there was enough build up or evidence to make me believe that they had anything in common other than both being into hiking. Therefore, Chris was phased out of the story and my line of interest. I usually resent characters who cheat on their partners and keep lying about it but, surprisingly, I did not feel this way towards Jill. Possibly because I was aware of the palpable connection between Luke and Kate and knew that Luke would be alright, even thought nothing actually happened. What I loved most about this film is how natural the conversations felt. They didn't seem artificial or forced in any way but like regular, natural conversations that people actually have. The jokes were lighthearted and well-paced and I actually believed the chemistry between the characters, especially Luke and Kate. Some films tend to set up jokes carefully in order to deliver a punchline but this script had a raw feel to the way characters conversed, in that, it doesn't feel like the characters are waiting for the other person to finish their line but are just unknowingly being filmed while having a random conversation. Although it is a story centered around 2 couples, it didn't feel all that cliché to me. Kate and Luke clearly belonged together and had a really fun and comfortable relationship which made them seem so perfectly compatible. However, at the same time, Luke also had a very sweet connection with Jill. So, despite clear indications that there was some sexual tension between Luke and Kate, they don't end up together but retain an endearing relationship that most people can appreciate. I wouldn't be entirely honest if I didn't admit that I would have liked to see Luke and Kate get together but I wasn't disappointed with the ending either.Apart from the fact that it might have been too obvious and corny for Luke and Kate to end up together, I also felt secure knowing that Jill was Luke's partner just because the movie convinced me they were meant to be together. As long as the whole 'Chris and Jill' conflict was resolved, by a compassionate kiss I might add, I was satisfied. I think it was also smart how the end scene contained no dialogue. It was simple, natural and effective in showing that words are not always the strongest way of communications but that simple gestures can go a long way.

Drinking Buddies is a well crafted pleasant film that looks at a platonic friendship between a man and woman who work together at a microbrewery. It's well acted, flows nicely, is very believable, and is so ordinary and every day that it will most likely be forgotten shortly after viewing.Drinking Buddies is one of those indie films that seem to be made by people who find their own little worlds and circle of friends incredibly fascinating and as such worthy of sharing with the world. There is nothing wrong with being enthralled with your life and friends, it's the ideal way to live. But just because you're happy and amused with your little world doesn't mean it's interesting to the world at large.Drinking Buddies is decent enough, and unlike similar my-life-is-fascinating indie films it's not full of cringe inducing dialog or idealized non-ideal characters. But almost anybody who'd want to watch Drinking Buddies has probably lived or is living a life like the one portrayed in Drinking Buddies. A sort of unstructured semi-slacker lifestyle; days spent fully employed in a just-left-of-mainstream job, off time spent hanging out with friends and drinking beer and having conversations and doing things that seem very meaningful when buzzed or drunk. If that describes you and if during one of those half drunken conversations you've ever said "We should just, like, get some cameras and film our lives and make a movie of it!" you'll be happy to know that you needn't bother because the people who made Drinking Buddies already did it for you.So rather than make a movie about your good but un-extraordinary life go buy a couple dozen craft brews, watch Drinking Buddies with your drinking buddies, then dream up some other creative endeavor. Maybe a food truck that sells pizza nachos or ice cream infused with booze.
