I enjoyed the film although Costner is far from my favourite actor. It kept me intrigued right up to the end. I won't say exactly how it ends but I've added a spoiler warning for disclosing that it ends in the native village. He walks slowly into the hut with the natives slowly parting before him stares at what is suddenly revealed and we learn the reason for all the signs that have gone before.Cynic that I am I really expected to see a basket containing the shrunken head of his wife. But that isn't what he sees, it ain't that sort of movie, I'm just that sort of guy!
... View MoreContinuing my plan to watch every Kevin Costner movie in order, I come to Dragonfly from 2002.Plot In A Paragraph: Dr Joe Darrow (KC) is a grieving doctor, who starts to believe his late wife is trying to contact him from beyond the grave. I think this is Kevin Costner's worst movie since his first good role in Fandango. Looking at the reviews, I can see it has some fans here, but I ain't one of them. Even the reliable Kathy Bates looks bored. It's dull, generic and cliché. Dragonfly does absolutely nothing for this Reviewer. I didn't like it in the cinema, I didn't like it when I bought the DVD, and I struggled to make it to the end watching it here.Kevin Costner who has saved worse movies than this has his work cut out here.
... View MoreI disagree with Berardinelli on this one. This was not a bad movie, definitely above average. I am not a believer in religion, the supernatural or any of that mumbo-jumbo, not at all, but I nevertheless found this to be a rather well made, decently constructed movie, which was also quite entertaining. Yes, it had a lot of cliché's, but they where not as apparent as in other cases. Kevin Costner was very good in his role, very believable. This is his movie all the way, he takes up about 90% of the screen time, but he does it well. Good camera and decent sound too. Again, not a masterpiece by all means, but a decent movie to watch on a rainy evening, and if your expectations are not set too high, you may even like it.
... View MoreThis was a movie that managed to keep my complete attention for at least the first 45 minutes or so. Unfortunately, it seemed like the director (Tom Shadyac) kept trying to artificially maintain the suspense by returning to the same type of scenario on more than one occasion. And it started to get old fast. For example, one child has a near-death experience and recounts to "Joe Darrow" (Kevin Costner) that his deceased wife ""Emily Darrow" (Susanna Thompson) has a message for him. Not long afterward another child also has a near-death experience and says the same thing. Likewise, both children are drawing misshapen crosses. Even Joe Darrow's pet parrot gets into the act. And we see the same images (dragonflies, crosses, etc.) again and again. Now, don't get me wrong, I liked this film overall. But there is such a thing as going to the well one too many times. And that's what happens in this case.
