This is a pretty great piece of work by Joss Whedon. I definitely recommend watching it. You can find the full three part series on YouTube for free. This series is an interesting exploration of what makes us good or evil, with shades of gray permutating both sides of the story's conflict. Neither side can be considered truly blameless or truly wrong in their actions or their intentions, with the title character simply wanting, at first, to win the girl of his dreams. This is an interesting deconstruction of the superhero genre that results in a sort of broken pedestal for much of the works it shares a genre with. All in all, I really recommend this work, for entertainment if nothing else.
... View MoreWhat all blogs should be like. Neil Patrick Harris is hit or miss for me. I think he's always at his best when his performances have certain musical aspects, so I'm quite satisfied with his efforts in this fine little miniseries. The first act starts strongly with Dr. Horrible being his non-famous self having a crush on a girl he sees at the laundromat, but being too shy to talk to her. No worries though, he's just a few weeks away from real audible connection. At the end of it, we get to know Horrible's opponent Captain Hammer, as testosterone-filled as unlikable, who puts in a nice duet with Penny, Horrible's crush. On a side-note, Simon Helberg plays the friend to a guy crushing on a girl named Penny. I've heard that one before.Second act was the highlight of the whole thing. It starts right away with a beautiful (non-)duet of Horrible and Penny and resembles a lot Whedon's spectacular Buffy episode "Once more with Feeling". Thumbs up also for "I ordered one frozen yogurt and they gave me 2" Penny grows closer to both guys and NPH ends the act with a powerful "Brand new day".Unfortunately the level sinks a bit in the last act. As goofy as the whole song was, the chorus from "Everyone's a Hero in their own way" really stays in your head. Also, this act is the first time where Dr. Horrible really seems like a villain. Admittedly the first two acts he seemed more like a comic-con nerd. With this change in character, also the ending was completely not what you expected.Nonetheless, I'd recommend it. I really hope Neil Patrick Harris can score a role à la Jackman's Valjean in the next years. He really has it all to give one of the most impressive musical performances of the 21st century.
... View MoreDr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog has an interesting story line that can be enjoyed by all people. Don't let the title scare you off, it might not seem the most entertaining but you'll be in for a treat. The movie has many different aspects to it that make it very entertaining. There are also a few elements that could be broken down in this film; they would be colors, the characters, and the setting. Pathos was also a big element of this film that can't be ignored. The film Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog can be enjoyed by all ages because of its interesting storyline and appealing characters. The setting for this movie revolves around the main character, Dr. Horrible. He is either filming a blog for his views, acting as an evil villain, or doing his laundry with Penny. Penny is a woman that Dr. Horrible has a huge crush on but doesn't know how to talk to her. The catchy tunes that they sing throughout the movie will get stuck in your head but you won't mind, they are very enjoyable. There is also another interesting character, Captain Hammer. He takes the place of a hero since Dr. Horrible is presumably the villain even though you don't view him that way. You probably won't view Captain Hammer has the hero but as a villain. This is because of pathos, the appeal using emotion. The audience is more emotionally attached to Dr. Horrible than Captain Hammer because Hammer can be seen as a woman stealer since he took Penny away from Dr. Horrible. Colors are also an interesting aspect in this film. Dr. Horrible wears a white lab coat for most of the movie while Captain Hammer wears predominately black clothing. White signifies the innocence of Dr. Horrible and the black expresses the evil in which Hammer possesses. Then after something catastrophic and unpredictable happens Horrible wears a red lab coat instead of the white one. Red is the color that expresses love and passion so I believe he's wearing a red coat to show he lost something that he loved. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog will take you on an eventful ride and captivate you from the very beginning. It has romance, comedy, and action which will peak the interest of any viewer. This film also won't disappoint if you enjoy watching the characters use different technology throughout the film. It establishes pathos which will appeal to your emotions more and more as you get further into the movie. The storyline and setting are very interesting along with the characters and very good acting. I'd recommend this film to anyone who is looking for a good laugh, a romance, or an action packed movie.
... View MoreAt first hearing the title, Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog, I was a little skeptical. It seemed like it was going to be a second rate children's musical. As soon as it opens with Dr. Horrible, played by Neil Patrick Harris, practicing his evil laugh, funny to say the least, I was immediately proved wrong. After the first few seconds I was enlightened to see Neil Patrick Harris cracking jokes as he read emails sent to him about his video blog and acting as a "horrible" doctor of evil. As the film continued I was overjoyed to see funny musical numbers sung by Dr. Horrible. In the first upbeat musical number we find that he is love with a girl, Penny, played by Felicia day. The song was sung in a surprisingly light and bouncy tone. One might think that a musical number sung by someone named Dr. Horrible, a super villain, would be dark and sinister but this movie is refreshingly contradictory in that way. As such it doesn't take long to figure out that the protagonist of this movie is actually the villain, Dr. Horrible who is trying to get into the Evil League of Evil. That means that the antagonist must be a super hero. Yes, that is right Captain Hammer, Dr. Horrible's arch nemesis played by Nathan Fillion, is the antagonist. Upon his entrance to the movie you can tell by his demeanor and the way he sings his part in the musical number that he is a womanizing, arrogant, self-absorbed super hero who, in this is movie, is actually the bad guy. His main purpose is to stop Dr. Horrible from achieving his evil goals and to keep him from getting the girl of his dreams, Penny. Penny is a sweet philanthropic girl who wants to help the homeless and no surprise Dr. Horrible is in love with her. His arch nemesis Captain Hammer rescues her and pursues her giving Dr. Horrible one more reason to want to destroy him.The ending is not as perfect as one might hope and it almost leaves something to be desired but it has a strong yet subtle message that everything comes at a cost. There are subtle messages strategically placed throughout the movie making it fun to watch over and over again because every time you watch it you find something new that you hadn't seen previously. If you add the hidden messages and girl drama to a superhero-villain dynamic plus a catchy musical score you have a show that is funny, refreshing and well worth watching. This show is a perfect example of why you should never judge a book by its cover or, in this case, a movie by its title.
