Taking place after the events of the first movie Light joins the task force headed by L and a new Kira emerges. Running at over 2 hours the suspense never lets up and is a satisfying conclusion to the live action death note movies. As with the last movie the performances and direction are excellent as with newcomer Erika Toda who stole the screen as Misa Amane and Kenichi Mastuyama as L. The rest of the series was adapted into the live action version and much of the final part of the original series was cut out leaving the movie to head off in its own direction whilst staying true to the manga/anime. Fans of Death Note might like this live action ending better since its much more unexpected and satisfying unlike the anime version.

Having seen the spin-off Death Note L:Change The World I was afraid by turning this into the DVD player. It started in a good manner but after a while the boring L was back in business. He just couldn't convince me. It's strange that I heard that fans were yelling towards the screen when he moves a bit or was eating something. For me it was all too much of blah blah. It clocks in over 2 hours and nothing really happens. The acting was okay and the ghosts were convincing too but the story line didn't work out for me. But someone told me if you aren't into the anime series that these flicks aren't your cup of tea. I like tea but not this taste.

This film must be seen in conjunction with the first "Death Note", as they are more complete and fulfilling together. Together, they were as one film - one magnificent film, filled with moments and story with much to follow and belong to. Independently, it was wonderful as well. I found every part of this film to be interesting, the characters to be interesting - people to follow and care about and hope for and more. But, when the final part of the film was laid before me, I was caught in an unsuspecting emotional realm only the best films can manage to achieve. As with the first "Death Note", there are imperfections. Yet, surrealism brings forgiveness - and that is one element that makes these films magnificent - along with fabulous acting. Again, the actors that play "L" and "Light" pull it off, as well as many others. Watch this patiently without prejudgment and you just may be immensely satisfied and pleased to have spent your time investing in it. Yes, a wonderful film down to the last drop of tear, even more so than the first… see them both together, in order.

Death Note: The Last Name is a brilliant sequel to the first Death Note and really develops the already capturing story line. It answers many unanswered questions from the first movie, as well as providing you with new questions, which are later answered in L Change the World. Kenichi Matsuyama and Tatsuya Fujiwara maintain exceptional performances as well as the new characters that are introduced. In this movie, you witness the battle of knowledge and wit between Light and L at it's best. I found the ending slightly confusing but after watching the movie a few times it became more clear and any elements that did not were resolved in L Change the World. The movie was superbly produced and the plot was once again intriguing, focusing not only on the main characters, such as Light, L and Misa, but also the Death Gods themselves. I would definitely recommend this movie to all Death Note fans.
