"La comunidad" is a funny and bloody comedy about a woman who finds a lot of money in a building ... she try to the take the money ... but the neighbors knows much more things than she think. And now a question: "The money or your life?".This funny Spanish comedy is about power, desire and ambition. Like a dark movie of horror, "La comunidad" is a terrifyingly funny story. Besides that, this movie is a new propose for the Spanish films by Álex De la Iglesia. Is a good reason for laugh, no scream so much ... but this films is very fun. And believe me ... you will love the end.*Sorry for the mistakes ... well, if there any

I especially enjoyed watching again Carmen Maura after seeing her in "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios". And in general I particularly like Spanish cinema, especially its taste for grotesque and dreamlike situations. The plot seems to me full of biblical echoes, the soul sacrificed on the Altar of Mammon. If it were not for the end, I would think the director is conveying a "Jesuitic" message. And I am yet not convinced he is not. Although the very first moments of the film prevents the spectators they are watching a thriller, I wasn't prepared to see such a climax of tension. Once I had "got the story", it was nearly automatic for me to foresee what would happen in the following scene. But at one crucial moment, the film really surprised me. My vote is 7.

Julia (Carmen Maura) and her husband are in their 50s and cannot find steady work. She finds herself doing temporary work as an apartment broker in Madrid. After showing a couple a lavish apartment, she calls her hubby over, thinking they could enjoy a night in the classy place. This romantic notion is killed when cockroaches fall through a crack in the ceiling. She calls the fire department and they go into above apartment, where they discover heaps of rotting trash...and a severely rotting corpse! After the scene has quieted down, Julia stumbles upon several clues that lead her back to the squalid apartment...and to 300 million pesetas! Now that she sees herself as a millionaire, she decides to take up residence in the fabulous apartment herself while pondering over what to do with the money.Everything is finally looking up for Julia.Until she stumbles into Darth Vader in the hallway. And why is her new neighbor bringing a large kitchen knife when coming to introduce himself? This terrific black comedy from Spain, finally released on DVD in the US, is a bit of a cross between "The Tenant" and "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World." Chockful of film references, "Common Wealth" (the clever English title, pun intended!) effortlessly blends and bends genres. It begins deceptively as a light comedy that turns dark abruptly. Then it glides into Hitchcockian suspense that transforms into all-out horror, all the while keeping its deliciously nasty humorous edge. The direction is top-notch and the camera-work fascinating. The main thing that makes this movie works is the exceptional ensemble cast of unlikeable oddball characters, led by the outstanding Maura (former Almodovar It-Girl).There are a few plot points that don't make sense and some of the pacing choices are rather odd, but the writing is witty enough to distract from this. There are also some action sequences that some might find ridiculous, but they fit in with the dark humor and inherent craziness and desperation in the story. "Common Wealth" is an excellent movie that is one of the best recent films from Spain that I've seen. My Rating: 8/10.

I'm not a fan of Spanish cinema - no not even of Almodovar - but I'd read the reviews and thought I'd give it a go. It's a delight! Particularly the first hour when the pace and the very dark humour never lets up at all. Carmen Maura is outstanding as the estate agent caught up in the web of crazy occupants, her own miserable domestic situation and 300 million pesetas. Admittedly the last 15 minutes is a bit daft but how else could Alex de La iglesia have ended it. Go and enjoy and then ask yourself, what would you do if you found the equivalent of £12 million?
