Cold Prey is a tight, well-paced slasher/horror that entertains. It stays strictly within the genre and has enough jumps and startles to satisfy. There is nothing that pushes the envelope here, but it does what you expect very well. It came highly recommended so I was disappointed that it was decent, but no more than that. While the acting is plausible and there is none of the teenage high jinks that spoil the Hollywood slashers, less commendable is the scarcity of comic relief. Jannicke, played by Ingrid Bolse Berdal, takes charge when disaster first strikes, staking her claim for last girl standing. She is a forceful guide to steer us away from the devil. A good genre flick, but nothing special.
... View MoreThis was a huge surprise to me! Beautifully directed and great acting all round this is as good as, in fact better, than many recent Hollywood horror efforts. It has a fairly simple plot but it works because of the excellent quality of every part of this movie's production. I can't say too much about it without giving away the story but I urge you to watch it. You will not be disappointed whether you prefer well-paced suspenseful build-ups or good old-fashioned gore you'll like this. It's not corny and doesn't have characters doing too many stupid things. The characters are believable and endearing. You don't want them to get hurt. You want them as friends! Most of their actions are understandable and there has been a lot of thought put into how each individual character would react to the situation they're in. No bland stereotypes here. I am hugely impressed and will be seeking out more work from Norway and this director (and some of the actors) as well. A well deserved 8 out of 10 from me.
... View MoreWhen I first saw this back in January 2008 I liked it but than I watched it a second time with a friend and fell in love with it. Any film involving snow I sort of take a shine too and this has had me smiling for years. The lead actress in Cold Prey just kicks ass and she is absolutely enthralling to boot. The setting is fantastic with a group of good looking twenty somethings that take refuge at a nearby ski lodge nestled tightly into the snow covered woods with a maniac on the loose. They must take refuge due to a rather gruesome skiing accident. After this the film is put into 5th gear as all the kids fend for their lives against the axe welding maniac. Now hands up if you have heard this plot say 1000 times in the 70's and 80's....yeah I thought so but Cold Prey has a Norwegian charm to it that pushes past its 70's and 80's American rivals and does so with gruesome delight. In my opinion right up there with the original Halloween, Friday the 13th part 2 and The burning. Now I am on to review Cold Prey 2.
... View MoreGoing by the impressive quotes on the DVD cover for Norwegian horror Cold Prey ('probably the most perfect slasher ever made' wrote one particularly well-known movie website), I was expecting a slick, powerful, and refreshingly original slasher prepared to rewrite the rules in order to constantly surprise and terrify its audience. What I actually got was an admittedly well-made thriller, but one lacking any true level of innovation. In fact, the basic set-up and the manner in which events play out in Cold Prey are as tired and predictable as your average US slasher (it's certainly not 'F***ing Awesome', as the same site also claims), with the usual uninspired jump scares, the same tired death scenes, and the oh-so-clichéd final girl vs the murderous psycho. It's moderately fun, moderately entertaining, and moderately gory, and features at least one scantily clad hottie covered in blood, but it ain't anywhere near as brilliant as you have probably heard.
