Cellular is an entertaining fast-paced thriller. The plot is about "Ryan Ackerman" (Chris Evans) who gets a phone call from a complete stranger "Jessica Martin" (Kim Basinger) she is very distressed and tells him that she has been kidnapped and that she has been clicking wires together, he doesn't believe her, but he still decides to go to the police to help her, there's commotion at the police station and he is told to take the phone call upstairs to another cop, "Ryan" then hears the bad guy "Ethan" (Jason Statham) over the phone threaten "Jessica", "Ryan" then believes her 100% and goes out of his way to help her.The performances are perfect and there's a tiny bit of humour mainly from an arrogant lawyer (played by Rick Hoffman, his character actually doesn't have a name). The only thing wrong with this film is the swearing, the words "Holy S*it" are used a lot and there's no need for it, Larry Cohen and Chris Morgan should have calmed down with those curse words when writing the story and screenplay (movies are not realistic, so why not go one step further and ban swearing from movies altogether?! and use milder words like "Oh, Snap" instead?!)Apart from the swear words, Cellular is brilliant. It is compared to "Phone Booth" (which has even more swearing, that movie has so much swearing that it actually ruined the film). There probably will not be any future movies similar to Cellular due to cellphones changing dramatically over the years, there's many ways to call for help via cellphones nowadays, a plot like Cellular probably wouldn't be even halfway plausible anymore.
... View MoreThis was a pretty good thriller, it starts out kinda cheesy but (Kim Basinger) gets herself kidnapped almost immediately so that the action starts within the first 5 minutes and never lets up. The plot is simple and there's nothing really remarkable here but still a solidly entertaining movie. The cast was decent too with Kim Basinger as a science teacher who reaches out on a damaged phone after being kidnapped. She does as a great job of looking scared and shaky throughout even if her dialogue gets a bit stilted at times as she was obviously doing voice-over for most of this.Chris Evans is the voice on the other end of the phone who at first doesn't believe her and then as the movie progresses finds himself running all over Las Angeles to help her and her son. Some decent action scenes there. Jason Statham was a surprise face here and this must have been made before he got top billing as he just plays Thug #1 and there aren't any fight scenes from him.I really enjoyed William H Macy (as I always do) he plays the good cop and his story was on the comical side of things; with a cool moustache he dreams of opening up a day spa with his wife, sampling mud masks and ultimately kicking ass. 8/17/15
... View MoreThis movie is not only a solid, spellbinding thriller; it is a rare example of Hollywood taking on truly powerful forces. The issue of police brutality has gone viral since this movie was made in 2004- one can see new, horrifying examples of it every day on You Tube. What makes this film so daring, so bold, and so unique is the fact it doesn't follow the normal mainstream media mantra of ignoring police corruption. It certainly doesn't glorify the police, as so many insipid television shows and movies do. It postulates a believable premise; that these corrupt officials would resort to killing an innocent family who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Looking at the writers and the Director (who died early this year at a premature age- no cause listed that I could find), there is not much to suggest a piece of work like this. But they certainly deserve credit for exposing a very real problem and creating an entertaining drama. I highly recommend this film to everyone.
... View MoreSome action film fans might be more forgiving than me when it comes to clichés and 'dedication to the task' at the expense of probability and realism. But to put it short: Will Beinbrink's 'heroic' security guard really annoyed me. When he drove against the traffic (in his security car - as an ironic, yet idiotic gimmick) to pursue some child kidnappers and endangering dozens of lives, I really thought he deserved to get killed in a frontal crash. Unfortunately that did not happen. As if that wasn't enough, he continues to run all sorts of mindless, unnecessary risks throughout the film - a film that is riddled with unmotivated action sequences that we have simply seen too many times both before and after this film. As an action movie "Final Call" certainly hasn't stood the test of time... And it did not reward my hope of a more sophisticated plot in any way.4 stars are inevitable for a film with a budget and a cast like this one. But that doesn't mean it's worth watching. Only recommended for fans of the participating actors.
