In Iowa, an adopted girl discovers her talent for butter carving and finds herself pitted against an ambitious local woman in their town's annual contest. Butter is the kind of movie that is easy to attack on it has an all star cast and it's a satire - comedy but the good thing is that unlike many other comedies this film knows what it is and it does a pretty good job with the material that it gets. It's not easy to make Jennifer Garner into a cold-blooded b*tch, racist rich girl and have Hugh Jackman as a sex addict idiot that will do everything to have her, Ashley Greene and especially Olivia Wilde do a pretty good job as well. But if there's a normal part of this film that is actually the best part of the entire movie that is definitely the character of the little girl called Destiny played by Yara Shahidi that girl steals every scene that she's in and props should also go to Rob Corddry and Alicia Silverstone who play her adopted parents and stand by her in everything that bugs her. I've seen the movie like 3 times by now and i gotta say it's fun it's not the best of any of this actors careers and it wasn't made to win Oscars but i think you're going to enjoy it if you know what to expect. (8/10)

After 15 years on top, Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell) is being pushed out of butter sculpting and he's fine with it. On the other hand, his ambitious wife Laura (Jennifer Garner) is not fine with it at all. While Bob seeks comfort from stripper Brooke/Tokyo Rose (Olivia Wilde) in his car, Laura crashes into them. Brooke still wants her $600 that she works so hard squeezing out of Bob. Laura enters the butter contest to continue the family winning streak. Brooke enters the contest to spite Laura. Meanwhile foster kid Destiny (Yara Shahidi) has another new family in Jill (Alicia Silverstone) and Ethan (Rob Corddry). She just wants to sculpt butter. It's more quirky than funny. Even though it takes a lot of jabs at middle America, it's not anything terribly mean-spirited. For a dark comedy, it has very light tone. Other than Laura, everybody else is quite nice. In fact, it also takes jabs at the soy eating Jill. If there is any problematic stereotype, it's yet another wise old soul in a little black girl. They're better off to add a sharper edge to her character. There is a low simmering charm about this movie that grows over time. The funniest characters are the two edgier characters Laura and Brooke. They deliver a couple of funny moments.

I really wouldn't rate any film 1 out of 10 very lightly. But this film is so unconvincing and superficial, that I could not do otherwise. For example, why does Bob go to a strip club? It seems completely impulsive and contrary to the history of his character depicted in great details just minutes before. Then there seems to be no coherency in Laura's character either. What was the cause of the marital problems - she seemed happy enough to have stuck it out for 15 years, so why now suddenly does she go back 360 degrees? What is the role of the stripper, apart from insisting on $600? She is not a catalyst for anything, and she does not add anything to the eventual outcome of the movie.I would like to think that an actor like Hugh Jackman is rather embarrassed about his role in the film, albeit with some real comic sense. These are just examples of the unconvincing characters and story line. The one compelling performance is by Yara Shahidi, but whose role is somehow diminished by racial jokes which seem completely out of context. Please stay clear of this one...

I didn't have high hopes for this film but what I saw was a terrible film. From the reviews, I expected some nastiness but this script quickly entered the realm of utterly distasteful and nonsensical/absurd. The first 10 minutes or so were good. The film seemed to hold promise for actually being good. But then the plot line became sick, with numerous non sequiturs. Four-letter words are flung without a proper context having been laid. It's like the writers had an inkling of a good idea but were not creative enough to carry it off. Who is so stupid as to sign off on a project like this? And Jennifer Garner was that desperate for money? For writers who lack the imagination, the story of the REAL butter lady from the Iowa State Fair would have made for a good movie without even trying.
