With absolutely no idea what this movie was going to be about it soon became a great movie with the basic theme that we are all animal lovers at heart. Its a shame that people cannot come to the aid of our own fellow human beings when the need arises. The devastating Tsunami in Indonesia saw millions in aid from Australia but when we cry out to the Indonesians to spare the lives of two of our own for being drug smugglers they turn a blind eye. Sure Drug smugglers and dealers are the worst but these two have done their time in Jail and show remorse for their actions. We need to treat each other the same way we would some stranded whales. Some reviewers have stated that Barrymore's character was a one sided character with little if any knowledge of these great animals but it only goes to show that she played the part well and made it seem all the more realistic. Worth seeing at least once.

This is based on a true story of a family of whales stuck under the freezing ice in Alaska and what happens next. A local news reporter recruits his ex, a Greenpeace volunteer, to save the family of gray whales. Then the whole world started to notice and the world's media descends on them all.Drew Barrymore is a bit too annoying as a Greenpeace activist. She's too shrill and needed to tone down her performance. John Krasinski is great as the everyman. Ted Danson relishes his role as an oil tycoon a little too much. He may have been miscasted. Kristen Bell is good as the ambitious reporter.

While this is a true story, it's too bad they didn't play up the angle of off-shore drilling. Instead, Ted Danson, who appeared to have the role of a ruthless drill executive, is reduced to saving three whales caught in ice.Drew Barrymore is excellent as the committed, dedicated activist. Of course, there is a love story attached here with a reporter, assigned to Alaska for 4 years. Then, comes a reporter from L.A., dedicated to moving up the ladder by strong reporting and little emotion.Naturally, politics enters the picture as it's 1988 and Dukakis and Bush are battling it out for the presidency and the story has political implications. This could have been stressed further as well.
