In the dark silence of the sea during World War II, the submarine USS Tiger Shark prowls on what should be a routine rescue mission. But for the shell-shocked crew, trapped together in the sub's narrow corridors and constricted spaces, this is about to become a journey into the sensory delusions, mental deceptions and runaway fears that lurk just below the surface of the ocean.

either way this is a good movie, solid suspensor with top performances from an unknown cast. The directer David Twohy keeps surprising me with good work in genre films. He has a good hand at building suspense, looking forward to his Riddick sequel. I was surprised Darren Aronofsky of Black Swan fame help write the story, but he does like physiological thrillers like this. The story does keep you on edge and in dought as to the true course of the events that unfold. Even if your not into ghost stories this is a solid submarine action movie exspecialy in the first half. The f/x of the boat and its plight look very good plus the submarine sets look very convincing with lots of detail.

The setting is the Second World, aboard a US submarine. But this is no war film, rather a clever, tension-filled horror story. Its claustrophobic atmosphere is a perfect setting for this haunted house themed horror. There are elements of "Alien" in that the interior is slightly grimy and the crew are tetchy, uncouth and sometimes unkind to each other – being as they are, at such close quarters. Most of the actors are lesser known stars, adding to the tension – you're not really sure who the good guys are.The periscope, the crews only view of the sea above, ads to the eerie atmosphere – A battleship looms into regular, horrifying view, seemingly remorseless in its pursuit. Additional creepiness is never seeing the battleship's crew. It appears a living entity, the submarine its prey. Its horrid arsenal of depth charges and hooks never seemed so terrifyingly awful in its usage before.I will not give away the plot or plots – there are many interweaving elements, seemingly unconnected, and it does get complicated at times. But it does make sense if you watch it more than once - as I had to. Anyway, I think it is a cracking good film and thoroughly recommend it.

The USS Tiger Shark appears to be haunted by the ghost of its dead captain, who died in a mutiny, and now seeks redemption. What is the crew gonna do?Perhaps it's my fault having seen Das Boot that I set my expectations a little too high of David Twohy's Below, a story which has nowhere to go (but down) and its suspense is largely ineffective outside of a few shocks. It is dull and uninvolving, has a disappointing pay off, and above all, just stands as another example of how poor a writer David Twohy is.Sorry, but I cannot recommend this one.

I tend to agree more with Ebert here rather than with the critics praising this movie. 'Below' is not a horror movie, but an attempt at making a 'claustrophobic' thriller with a 'paranormal' twist. The problem with the film in my opinion is that it aspires to be a horror movie as well, and this is where things go wrong. In trying to do this, the director is uncertain whether to make a 'believable' film or go over the top and turn it into a horror flick, thus resulting in an ineffective mix of the two that doesn't really work.Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad movie, just your 'run of the mill' slightly-below-average Hollywood production.
