AVH: Alien vs. Hunter Trailers

A journalist named Lee Custler (William Katt) is out jogging when a flying object passes behind him and crashes. Sheriff Joel Armstrong (Collin Brock) picks him up and they go to check it out. They find an abandoned caravan close to where the object crashed. As they discover the object and realize it is a spaceship, an Alien emerges. The Alien (resembling a giant spider with a lizard-like head and torso) then chases them, after which Lee flees to the car. However Armstrong makes a stand, trips, falls and is killed by the Alien that then leaves. A terrified Tammy finds Lee and they call the local authorities but their car is destroyed by the Alien.

An alien spacecraft crashes in the Californian wilderness, releasing a giant spider-praying mantis creature which promptly begins killing anyone in its path. As the surviving members of the local town attempt to fight it, a mysterious alien Hunter also appears, trying to kill the creature, but finding plenty of time to hunt some of the local humans as well. The Asylum is a production company based in California which has become infamous amongst the genre community for its 'mockbusters' – ultra-cheap generic rip-offs of major Hollywood blockbusters in a cynical attempt to make some easy money out of fooling videostore customers by using deceptive titles & packaging. They hit their stride in 2007, which was the year that they started making these 'mockbusters'. In the case of AVH: Alien vs. Hunter, the Asylum decided to pre-empt the anticipated success of ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM. But with the source film bombing badly at the box office, the prospects of AVH went to the gurgler fast. There has been some controversy surrounding the making of AVH – it seems that credited director Scott Harper was not actually responsible for making the film. If the numerous rumours circulating around are to be believed, Harper just showed up to shooting & did practically nothing, standing around playing games on his iPhone while the assistant directors (Justin L. Jones & Xavier S. Puslowski) did all the work. If this is true, then Harper doesn't deserve the credit for making the film. With all that going on, it's a surprise that upon watching the film, AVH actually seems more coherent than initially expected. The film will never been seen by anyone as a classic – in fact it is pretty weak, with a paper-thin plot & some bad scripting. The visual effects are a mix of suit-work & cheap CGI that doesn't look terribly convincing. There is also some confusion in the Asylum's in-house effects company over the visual effects needed, with a couple of shots not making sense. The costumes look cheap – the Hunter's outfit looks like a cobbled-together armour suit with a cracked welder's mask & an upside-down wok for a hat. The alien creature looks slightly better. As for acting, the cast give a mixture of reasonable & purely reactive performances. William Katt, Dedee Pfeiffer & Randy Mulkey are the only professionals of the bunch while everybody else either doesn't know what they are doing or giving strictly amateur performances.

This was so bad I was sick because of bad acting. computer generated imagery was obviously at the bottom of the list for equipment along with scripts, actors, directors and the set and were obviously beaten by the need for Dohnuts or something else a movie doesn't actually need. There is completely no realism in this film even when a giant ship crash lands in front of a cycler he doesn't even notice it. This film needs more of practically everything and every single copy should be destroyed with the original so it can never be shown again even on television. This film is so bad I need to make up a rating that will actually say the terror that I saw on the day. I give this movie a -10.

Sometimes a movie is so bad that it's good (i.e. Night of the Comet). This isn't one of those movies. Some movies are so bad that you wish you had never seen them. This would be one of those movies, but it has one redeeming quality: it sets a new benchmark for horrible sci-fi / horror movies. Once you've seen it, you'll watch other movies and find yourself saying, "Well, at least it wasn't as bad as 'Alien vs. Hunter'".Looking past the fact that this is a complete ripoff of "AVP", the acting and production quality aren't too bad. What ruins this movie is the plot / script (not sure what word is best here). It's not that the movie is confusing by any means, like when a complicated movie gets edited too much and loses its meaning, although it does seem that editing is at least part of the problem. There are plot holes left and right, and I constantly found myself wondering why the characters acted as they did. Sometimes you could chalk it up to the typical "girl runs upstairs to avoid murderer" nonsense used to draw the plot along, but other times it just seemed to be random events strung together. It would be like watching a movie where a guy is running from a monster towards an abandoned hospital then the monster is chasing him through a house of mirrors at a fun house. And now my brain hurts from trying to think about the movie. Go see it if you want your brain to hurt.
