This 1985 Anne of Green Gables has always been one of my all-time favourites. I love the book also, and while I am the kind of person who watches an adaptation on its own merits while sometimes suggesting what could have been done instead, I found this adaptation to be true in detail and spirit to the book. The adaptation looks beautiful, lush scenery, beautiful but never idealistic costumes and photography are definite things to like, as well as the charming lilting score. The script has its fair share of droll and heart-warming moments, and the story is still the one I know and love, timeless, thought-provoking and simply beautiful. The pacing I found perfect, I personally never found it flat, then again I was so entranced in everything else I would have overlooked it. The acting I can't fault, Megan Follows is a wonderful actress and her Anne is always likable. Jonathan Crombie also embodies the role of Gilbert, Collette Dewhurst's performance is a perfect blend of hard and soft and Richard Farnsworth is a charming Matthew. In conclusion, amazing, was a favourite, still is and always will be. 10/10 Bethany Cox
... View MoreI simply love this movie. I first saw it with my mother when I was about 8 or 9, and we both fell in love. Kevin Sullivan takes such care into recreating Avonlea. He's created a whole majestic universe, and you feel like you are a member. When a character has done something good and people in the movie applaud, you feel like applauding with them. I have resisted many times the urge to cry, laugh, and cheer while watching this movie. The actors are fantastic. Megan Follows is brilliant, and she really embodies what Anne is all about. Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert is also amazing. I can watch this movie over and over again. I also like that it stays very true to the novel, with little differences here and there to make it more dramatic and make it flow easily, but it doesn't feel butchered. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone.
... View MoreI first saw the Anne of Green Gables mini-series on PBS and immediately fell in love with the characters, the scenery and the music. I never tire of this movie. I think I've probably seen it 50 times. Megan Follows really captures the spirit of that irrepressible young orphan Anne Shirley. Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth really give stellar performances as well. Richard Farnsworth plays the character Matthew Cuthbert and that character was part of the reason I ended up naming my firstborn son Matthew. I can't think of a better movie to share with your family. This movie was beautifully written and filmed and I highly recommend it!
... View MoreI was about 12 years old when I found L. M. Montgomery's novel, "Anne of Green Gables" at a small community library. I was immediately taken by orphan Anne Shirley and her various misadventures, and grew to love all the characters of Avonlea. Prince Edward Island went to the top of my list of places to visit in the future. Anne was a girl with character-not a put-upon girl who was afraid to speak up for herself. That was a refreshing change from many books aimed at young ladies "back in the day". I have to say that this show was wonderful to see. Megan Followes "was" Anne. Colleen Dewhurst "was" the crusty but lovable Marilla. My favorite was Richard Farnsworth's portrayal of Matthew, the shy, sweet bachelor brother of Marilla. For those who aren't familiar with the story, Matthew and Marilla decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew around the farm. The orphanage makes a mistake and sends Anne. Matthew doesn't have the heart to send her back, so they travel on to Green Gables, Matthew and Marilla's house. Needless to say, Marilla is not amused, but Anne eventually wins her heart. With a temper as fiery as her hair, and a quick mind and huge vocabulary, Anne quickly makes a friend of Diana Barry and catches the eye of Gilbert Blythe. Anne's adventures made for great reading. I am happy to say that this production catches the spirit of the story beautifully. I cried just as hard at the end of this movie as I did at the end of the book when Matthew died. Another 10 from me!
